I have loved the Doodle Champion Island Games. It is so lovingly styled like a number of my favorite 16-bit games. I managed to get the scroll for 6 out of 7 of the mini-games. I had zero luck at Artistic Swimming. Frankly surprised I managed Rock Climbing. I was so good at falling off the Q-Bert pyramid as a kid that friends and family took

They might have surprised me, but nothing could compete with the Best Friend Squad. It's the reason I watched the first couple of seasons when it was new instead of just the first couple of episodes. I mean the original Bow was one of my various archer crushes as a kid, and their updating of the character in the reboot is my favorite piece of updating. Catra's updating is a close second.
...it was such an unexpected delight!
It really was! I still can't believe how scared I was for Hordak in the series finale and relieved that She-Ra could purge Horde Prime from him.
I didn't bring any preconceived notions to the show, never having watched the original...
I'm old enough to have seen a variety of things I loved as a kid get reboots, and I try to go into them with as open a mind as I can. Some I fall hard for in their own right, some I like as a reasonably sound variation on the original, and some don't work for me. At first, the She-Ra reboot just seemed like a reasonably sound variation. It is only in the later seasons that it really stands out on its own for me. It gets so much bigger than the old show.
...it was probably much less of an accomplishment than in your case...
Yeah, I didn't start realizing that they were actually getting me to care about Hordak until we were seeing his grief and hurt from thinking Entrapta betrayed and abandoned him. That's when I started going, "What is wrong with me?" By the series finale, I was totally invested. Hell, I liked the whole Wrong Hordak business because I felt it helped show how much the clones are just little kids when they're first cut off from Horde Prime. I like to think Wrong Hordak got more of a proper name once they got the right Hordak back.
...but still -- I had not expected to be emotionally invested in Hordak at all, after the first couple of seasons XD
Like I said, the first couple of seasons just felt like an okay update of the original series. The really great stuff is in the later seasons. Hell, I wasn't all that fond of Mermista or Sea Hawk separately, but somehow the show managed to make me feel like they did fit together.

Aww! I really liked Bow -- he was my favorite in the early seasons, and is still one of my favorites overall; I just felt like there wasn't much for him to do in the last couple of seasons, after he comes clean with his dads, and so there was less focus on him, except in a supporting role.

Yeah -- I thought he was headed for some sort of redemptive sacrifice for Entrapta's sake, and was very relieved that he actually got to live through the finale! And Wrong Hordak, too -- I ended up becoming weirdly fond of him and his newfound revolutionary zeal, lol. (I do think he gets a proper name after the show ends.)

Heh, I agree with this, actually. Mermista on her own I find rather one-note (although I liked her in the D&D episode), and Sea Hawk on his own is rather too much for my taste, but I ended up kind of rooting for these crazy kids XD

Nod. I was curious about the He-Man reboot, actually -- while I never watched She-Ra, He-Man was the first cartoon I watched religiously and was a big fan of. So, disappointing to hear it did not work for you. (I'm waiting to hear some more reviews to triangulate whether or not I want to actually give it a shot...)

Yay! Because the updating worked so well, he's just as much my favorite in the reboot as the original.

I was all right with his having more of a supporting role in the later seasons because that was all he ever had in the original series. He's more central in the reboot.

That's exactly what I was afraid of!

Thanks!

I didn't care for his reboot as much as Bow's, but I did appreciate that they let him be crazy about Mermista rather than Adora. I mean in the original series Bow and Sea Hawk basically existed for two reasons -- to add some male characters to the cast, and have a crush on/be in love with She Ra/Adora. Bow had a crush on She Ra and Sea Hawk was Adora's boyfriend with no clue about her also being She Ra. The reboot might not increase the number of male characters, but it at least lets Bow and Sea Hawk care about other people than She Ra/Adora.

Yeah, they weren't my favorite 'ship, but they worked.

Without getting too spoilery, the first five episodes end on a cliffhanger, and how it gets resolved in the remaining episodes that haven't been dropped yet may mollify me some. I don't imagine they'll fix everything, but they could fix some things.
I'm waiting to hear some more reviews to triangulate whether or not I want to actually give it a shot...
I understand. I'd keep an eye on a) how familiar a given reviewer is with the original series, and b) what if any feelings they have about it. I didn't see until after I'd watched the episodes that have been dropped so far that Kevin Smith has said he "almost hate-watched" the original series. If I had seen it, I probably wouldn't have bothered to give the series a try.
