So, my life has become infinitely more exciting since i've actually been doing something that didn't involve sitting at home alone. imagine that. thus, you all get lovely updates on a regular basis. today was the last day of orientation weekend, and we pretty much had the entire day to ourselves to do whatever we wanted. so, after breakfast, me and about 12 other people decided that we wanted to go down to the headwaters of the mississippi river. that's where the river actually starts. lake itasca is the lake that feeds the river, so it's really cool because i've now seen the start of the longest river in the US. pretty cool, eh? so, instead of hiking there, we decide to canoe. i absolutely adore canoeing! it's really relaxing and beautiful out on the lake, but it's also active, so it feels great. we took out 5 canoes, i think. i was in the back because i know how to steer. all those trips white water rafting have made me a decent paddler, i think. i think it was about a mile trip one-way out to the headwaters made slightly more difficult by an at times relatively strong head-wind, but we stayed strong and pushed through it. the headwaters are really really pretty and it was nice to be out and surrounded by nature again. and, i can now say that i have walked through/across the mississippi river. sounds rather more impressive than it actually was, i think. but cool nonetheless. we then returned and played volleyball for a while out in the sun. it was an absolutely gorgeous day today, too, which was excellent. i think it got up to around 80 degrees, but tomorrow it's supposed to be cooler, i think, which is very sad.
in other news, my head has taken quite the beating today. there are two volleyball courts located directly adjacent to each other. as in, there is about 6 inches separating them. this said, we were not the only group out utilizing the beautiful weather this afternoon. a group of the U of MN field researchers were playing volleyball right next to us, and, story of my life, i get knocked on the side of the head by a volleyball from their game. wonderful. at least i didn't look, so i got hit in the side of the head rather than directly in the face. oh, well. it didn't hurt at all. i do have a pretty thick skull afterall. then, i was back in the cabin rummaging for something on my bed, and i stand up and knock the back of my head on the top bunk. somehow, though, i have managed to escape having a headache. it must be all of the fresh air or something. but, even with those two little mishaps, today was another wonderful day.
my laboratory class starts tomorrow, so i'm excited to get going with science and am looking forward to working in the lab again. i absolutely love the people here, so, even if the lab techniques are boring, the people will keep me entertained, i'm sure.
