Okay, I had the day off and I broke down and went to a kiddie show at the Tyson's Corner Border's Books in Northern Virginia.
I should describe it, since it was a bit of fun, but I am not sure what to include.
Set list:
Robot Parade
Alphabet of Nations
Alphabet Lost and Found
Dr. Worm
Istanbul
Particle Man
Flying V
Clap Your Hands
Bed Bed Bed
Approximately.
Performing were John Flansburgh, John Linnell and Marty Bellar, the new drummer, who sang "Alphabet Lost and Found" very nicely. The Border's piped the DVD's music over the loudspeakers over and over, so by the time we got to the show, we could probably sing along.
Got kicked out from down front, and got squished off to the side, but I was close enough that I could still see even with my eyes. It was wonderous crowded. Took some photos.
Afterward, I ran into Brian and his wife, with their son on Brian's shoulders, looking worse for wear. They didn't stay to get a DVD signed. Good thing, the line was amazing; I was there so long I had a complete cocktail type conversation with a pregnant lady in the line. Got a DVD signed for my nephew, under the plastic cover, so he can chew on it at will.
I know the TMBG folklore has it that Mr. Flansburgh is the friendly Giant, and that Mr. Linnell doesn't really like the fans, but I didn't actually see that. Maybe I missed something. Mr. Linnell seemed perfectly relaxed and friendly, signed stuff with a grin, and Mr. Flansburgh seemed more tense and business-like. Nice looking and confident, but serious.
The only thing I can think is that Mr. Flansburgh likes and pays special attention to their real customers, one of which I am not - teens to folks 3o years old - patting their shoulders, asking their names, and they're the ones reporting this Flansburghish friendliness? Also, I didn't approach Mr. Linnell and try to chat with him; maybe he hates that? Or under the "target audience" theory, maybe middle-aged broads don't bug him for autographs, so he smiles at them more than the fans who report him as not very welcoming? Hence my false sense that he is generally friendly? I mean, he might be a rude horrible bastard, I guess, but he smiled at me like a nice guy. I found him kinda soothing in person.
