I didn't like the song on Join Us. Seems like dumb pop, but the video is charming and kind of hilarious, with John Linnell lip-synching meaningfully at the camera.
He's so not-handsome, and so completely delightful and interesting to watch - you can see him playing around with point-of-view, which is one of the things I love about his work. He's both the observed celebrity and the observer, and he makes us the observer by extension, watching his hair bouncing fancy-free? The expression of shared dry humor, that little conspiratorial smile: Yep, you and I both know that celebrity is ridiculous, and I am going to point out how you look to me and somehow not offend you. Somehow it's okay, because we are in on the joke, the reality that everyone in the scene is ridiculous, only ... the rest of the band isn't mugging, isn't saying anything silly. They are being musicians doing their job, completely serious. Are they the real observers? Are they even looking at Linnell? No, they aren't.
