EDIT: The tub had been leaking slowly for a long time, in a clandestine way, and I only discovered its little hobby when I reached up into the entryway coat closet top shelf directly below it and felt water on the rainslickers stored there.
The plumber, a phlegmatic Sicilian with three silver earrings, rooted around in the tub's access space, noted that with the access panel door open one could see daylight through the ceiling of the closet, and that the floor felt soft to him, but you couldn't know how far the damage had gotten until you took up the tiles.
"Is it dangerous? Can we still use the tub?" I asked in my best worried housewife voice.
He paused, then without any change in expression said, "Well, you cou' fine yourself takin' a shower on the groun' floor."
