Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?
Yoruichi Shihouin/Kisuke Urahara (Bleach)
Of the many, many, many, many things that make "Bleach" the Most Fucking Awful Manga/Anime Series Currently Running... this is not the biggest of them. But it's definitely fucking up there, I can tell ya that.
I will admit right off the bat that having been a Yoruichi/Soifon shipper, I may be a little biased, but even if we discount the fact that there is actually a mutual (if small) degree of emotional connection/unresolved sexual tension between them, Yoruichi and Kisuke do have a long history together but that doesn't change the fact that there is literally zero romantic chemistry these two have.
I'm not even being facetious here-- half the time Yoruichi's around him she displays little emotion, and generally seems bored, a pretty massive shift from the (charitably termed) rowdy person she normally is. This COULD be interpreted as them being so close that there's no 'big' emotions on display, a prospect I could buy if Kubo wasn't completely horrible at portraying believable human behavior. More than anything it seems like it's relying on a simplified 'explanation' (They're friends! + They're good-looking = TRU LURV) rather than anything as silly as, you know, developing and characterizing the 'relationship'. But hey, who has time to bother with that shit when there's MONOTONOUS NO-GIRLS-ALLOWED (to do anything remotely interesting) AKSHUNZ TO WASTE TIME WITH INSTEAD LOLOLOL
The thing that really boggles the mind is that the fandom characterizes this ship as a very banter-heavy/flirtatious one (with a law-required side of 'Soifon "cured" of her silly 'phase' when the right man comes along ISN'T THAT WONDERFUL'). Frankly, I'd love to see the version of "Bleach" they're reading that's given them THIS impression; maybe that one has good writing and interesting action and gay characters who have more dimension than 'walking punch line.' :)
