Happy belated Dominion Day! (AKA Canada Day) We celebrated it at work in 1846 by... toasting to the Queen! (Victoria, that is.) Denying that the Canadiens of the St. Lawrence river valley will ever be autonomous! Emphasizing how awesome the Hudson`s Bay Company was as a government!
Anyway, in honour of Dominion Day and because I just feel like it, here is a collection of history related things I have run across on the internet recently.
The British Library on the Victorian era. A nice overview in categories with many images and primary sources!
Edwardian Interiors - a blog post on the influences from the cluttered Victorians, but changes were afoot!
John Thompson's Photographs of Street Life in London in the 19th century. It's interesting to see photographs of people other than dour-faced, smartly-dressed elites.
The Differences between the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and England Explained. A short video explains in a fun an entertaining manner something I thought I knew already, but not really! Now I know so much more!
Rebuilding the Titanic - an interactive timeline on the history of the construction of this famous ship(wreck)!
The silent film version of Alice in Wonderland, made in 1903. Really creative special effects! I <3 the Cheshire Cat.
A woman's bathing costume from 1875. Surprisingly posh. (From the same Fashion Museum website, how about
a hat from 1905 that looks like a whole bird perched on the wearer's head?)
The first human being (accidentally) caught on film in 1838 or early 1839.
For the 20th century minded, how about a blog post on
colour photographs of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) of the Second World War?
A postcard from 1912 returns to Brooklyn - neat-o news story.
6 People Who Had No Clue Their Faces Were World Famous. On a lighthearted note... How about these history blogs celebrating the hotness of past historical figures?
My Daguerreotype Boyfriend
Fuck Yeah History CrushesOMG Cravats! And my favourite...
Bangable Dudes in History. (They explain why, too! It's not just looks!)
And now, finally... I love really old video, I really do, especially of street scenes. How about one from 1903, to match the Alice in Wonderland video?
