Let's talk about Spanish food, guys! My top faves so far:
-Catalan Cream: a desert specific to this region. In appearance and taste it is close to creme brule. (curse you, American iPod spellcheck which refuses to acknowledge the existence of such an awesome food and instead wants to replace it with the much less delicious-sounding "frene burn". :P) Anyway, it's a slightly different (less French and more Catalan) take on this fabulous desert: creamy custard underneath, crunchy burned sugar on top.
-Paella: rice cooked with spices, turning it one of several shades of yellowish-orange, plus various small veggies (corn and peas are common), plus loads of seafood: mussels, scallops, shrimp, whole prawns (heads, legs and all - some so big they look like young lobsters). If it's a "mixed" paella it tends to have bits of chicken or pork or some other unidentifiable but delicious white meat. Paella in general seems to strike just the right balance in amounts of veggies vs protein... And deliciousness.
-The whole idea of tapas - smaller plates of food eaten hours before the main supper, which is quite late compared to Canadian standards. In fact, we've been treating tapas like our final meal of the day sometimes. >_> Anyway, they're often fried (or deep fried) somethings, especially seafood, but also other things like sliced octopus and potato salad, which was a surprisingly delicious combination! :3
om nom nom,
oh those crazy spaniards,
onwards to spain!
