Wexford, part trois

May 30, 2010 20:54

The town of Wexford is really nice and relaxing, especially after Dublin. We've split off into two smaller groups, and Sara and I have been puttering about, checking out the ruined abbey (derelict since the fiercely protestant Cromwell invaded Ireland and destroyed it in 1649), and so on.

For lunch we shared a "small" order of fish and chips (fresh haddock and garlic&cheese fries) while sitting on the docks on the sea shore. Right now, were relaxing on the lawn in front of the friary, reading, writing, chatting, and, most importantly, relaxing. :)

Later:
Sara and I made an epic supper. It was very organic, and not in a chique and expensive way. You shall soon see why. It consisted of:

-a pack of pasta (think Hamburger Helper, with powdered sauce included, just add water) from some eastern European country (judging by the indescipherable writing), taken from the "eat me, I'm free!" pile in the Dublin hostel

-leftover buttermilk wholegrain bread bought in Dublin two days ago, eaten with butter or crumbled into the pasta

-sliced cucumber, for snacking

-free tea from the Wexford hostel kitchen

-free garlic, plus paprika to taste from this hostel's "eat me, I'm free!" pile

-flour from the abovementioned pile, to thicken up the sauce when we realized we'd put too much water in the pot

-half a baguette each, bought in a pack of three from Tesco for one euro, total (to go stale tomorrow), dipped in the pasta soup it turned out to be

-two hardboiled eggs, mushed up into the pasta

And against all odds, on the knife's edge of culinary disaster, it was delicious! Total cost? Like a euro and a half each. And we have leftovers for all three meals tomorrow! Eggs for breakfast; cucumber, baguettes, free margerine & eggs for lunch; and free cuscus(sp?), oxo cubes, and noodles from the free pile for supper. My wallet and stomach both love me for this plan.
