Summary: Sometimes Kate speculates what it would have been like if she had stayed on the run with Cass.
There are days when she wonders. If she had stayed and if they’d walked off into the sunset together, disappeared over the hill of the known and real and melted through the sun, if things would have been different.
But then again maybe they would have just fallen off the edge of the earth.
But some days she can see it. Can whisper the first light as it peaks through the car windows, blink against Cass’s profile in the driver’s seat as if it were reality. Something soft and worn tinkling over the radio airwaves, the yellow signs whisking by beside them. She could wake up with a crick in her neck but then Cass would smile at her and Kate wouldn’t need to know where they were, just where they were going. They could drive to California or the Midwest or someplace south of the border, anywhere that the pavement guided them and that kept the wind at their backs.
But no. Instead there’s a white box where she lives, follows her everywhere. The walls are calked with regret and misdeeds and everything she never said and it doesn’t matter that the windows aren’t barred because she always feels trapped.
But there’s still the hope every time she falls asleep that she might wake to sun and roads and a destination always just beyond the horizon.
