summary: shannon thanks sun for saving her life. awkwardly.
The scent of eucalyptus clouds her nose, clean and cool, belaying the association with her almost-death. An island riddled with falling rocks and wild animals and she almost bites it because her own lungs tried to suffocate her. Figures.
Thankfully Boone’s nervous flutters have flitted away for the moment, allowing her time to be someone other than the poor girl who just had an asthma attack. There’s still tightness in her chest and that’s enough of a reminder. Speaking of…
“Hey,” Shannon croaks out to the Asian woman beside her, startling her out of whatever train of thought was chug-chug-chugging her right out of reality. The woman - Sun? - looks at her with wide, anxious eyes threatening to swallow her whole face in milky white and ebony.
“Oh, right. You don’t speak any English. Meaning you can’t understand what I’m saying… so I’m basically talking to myself. Great.”
Sun offers her a tight, polite smile, teeth hidden, and Shannon tries to conjure up one of her own.
“Even if you can’t understand me, I just…” She winds a loose string from her hem around her finger, shrugging her shoulders, “I just wanted to thank you. For you know, the whole saving my life thing? I’d pay you but…” her fingers curl inside her pockets, pulling forth a worn, dingy nickel and offering it to a puzzled Sun. “This is all I have.”
She nods, an unexpected level of understanding in her eyes, and busies herself again with herbs.
