summary: kate's parole sentence finally comes up. i think you know where i'm going with this.
Her fingertips trace the edge of five violet petals. If she were alone she’d run her lips over them too, yearning to know if they feel as soft as she imagined. Her eyes meet Kate’s, then travel down to her mouth, and she wonders if all of her thoughts have double meanings these days.
“It’s beautiful.”
Kate gestures to the bed of flowers, though she could have been referring to the whole green house, alive with splashes of bright colors on a leafy canvas.
Sun’s smile turns wistful, her eyes once again drawn to the purple bloom. For the moment it’s the only living thing she can make sense of.
“I’d hoped so.”
She doesn’t say she’d done it for her, an attempt to keep her close after the island, but something tells her Kate already knows.
A tiny hand grips hers and Sun’s head levels on instinct.
“Show me.”
So she does; pointing out plants with outrageously complicated Latin names because she’d made a point to learn them all, but she gets the feeling Kate is more interested in looking at pretty flowers and their pretty hands intertwined.
It’s by a cushion flower that Sun finally kisses her, lowering to her knees by the plant’s fallen cobalt blue petals and hugging her waist. She whispers I missed yous into her stomach and raises the hem of Kate’s shirt so she can kiss the skin underneath.
This time she doesn’t have to wonder if it’s a soft as petals too.
