The sun had set and the moon and stars had come out; it was time. Nino grinned, getting out of bed. He opened his door and looked around, seeing all the lights off- good, his mom and sister were sleeping. Nino quietly closed the door and locked it, then putting some pillows under his blanket on his bed to make it look as if Nino were still under it. Still in his pajamas, he opened his windowsill and crawled out of it, nimbly jumping down onto the soft grass. Nino breathed in the warm yet cool night air, smiling to himself.
Nino walked over to the house across the street in only his slippers. He went to the backyard, and once he saw a window with a sticker of a fish eating bread on it, Nino knocked on the window softly. Only seconds later, the window opened and Nino was greeted with Ohno’s tired face, the moonlight hitting it perfectly.
“Oh-chan, let’s go, okay?” Nino whispered.
“Eh? You mean to that dream place of yours?” Ohno asked in a slightly slurred voice. He rubbed his eyes to get rid of the blurriness, only to see the silhouette of Nino’s head more clearly.
“I know it’s real!” Nino said, pouting. “The Rainbow Bridge is right by-”
“Okay, okay, I’ll go with you.” Ohno smiled despite himself when he saw Nino beam up to him. He took Nino’s hand which helped him get down from the window. “But my mom...”
“Don’t worry, she won’t realize you’re gone! We’ll go home once the sun rises, okay?” Nino smiled and led the way, still holding onto Ohno’s hand. Ohno was still a bit uncertain, but he didn’t let it show on his face.
Walking down the street with their light steps, Nino chattered away about Aiba’s silly experiments while Ohno listened quietly, both of them laughing after a few stories. It was peaceful; just walking down the empty street with the moonlight shining on them and their laughter setting the mood.
“If we were invincible, we’d be able to go anywhere,” Nino said cheerfully, swinging their arms enthusiastically. Ohno smiled, watching Nino fondly.
“So...Where’s this Rainbow Bridge?” Ohno asked.
“Hm? We’re crossing it right now you idiot,” Nino chuckled, still looking cheerful. Ohno looked down at his feet, only seeing the dark and hard ground; he was sure this street hadn’t been named ‘Rainbow Bridge’ either.
Nino stopped in front of a building- it was an empty house, Ohno knew. No one had lived in it for as long as he could remember.
“You need a ticket,” Nino said.
“For what?”
“To ride on the night sky- but don’t worry, I’ll treat you today,” Nino said as if it were the most exciting thing ever. “Come on, hurry,” Nino said, pulling Ohno with him into the house’s backyard. He jumped onto a large rock and climbed the tree near it, helping Ohno up as well. As the tree was near the house’s roof, Nino lightly stepped onto a branch and jumped softly onto the roof, Ohno quickly following suit.
“Kazu, what are we doing??” Ohno asked, panting slightly. Nino shushed him, crawling across the roof to sit on the side facing the whole town.
“See? This place does exist, doesn’t it?” Nino asked softly, looking out to the quiet world.
“Kazu..” Ohno breathed, his eyes sparkling. He took Nino’s hand and squeezed it softly. To the right was a shower of stars; to the left was the moonlight. But next to Ohno was the person he loved most.
“Doesn’t it feel good?” Nino asked, his eyes looking out over the roofs, but not really looking at anything in particular. “Being together. It feels right.”
Ohno could only nod.
I'm sure I'll never forget
The scenery of this town that I saw with you
Because from now on we'll be together forever
Because this is our paradise.
