As I write these opening words, I pause to gaze out the windows of my upstairs workroom onto the broad lawn and to the creek beyond, which we call Purple Crane. Then the young woman appears at the chamber window, her mouth open, gasping, her throat rippling with internal motion. "Why a taxi, for heaven's sake?" Tomorrow belongs to them.
