Songs that move you

I was on the way home a few minutes ago, listening to "Damage Control" by John Petrucci. As lame as it sounds, I was deeply moved. Other songs that do this to me include "Anna Lee" and "Disappear" by Dream Theater, "The Warmth" by Incubus, "In Loving Memory" by Alter Bridge, and "Skeleton Song" by Sevendust ( Read more... )

I really need to check out Orestes? Is it about Ancient Greek stuff? Or does it have nothing to do with the historical Orestes?

Orestes was the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra [and the brother of Electra].
Agamemnon died and Clytemnestra fell in-love with another man. When Orestes found out, he was furious that his mother had
moved on after the death of his father and killed both his mother and her new lover.

Maynard took the song and made major points about the depth of this ancient story.
How the bond between mother and son were torn apart by deception and murder, but nothing will ever truly tear apart their real bond.

I actually wrote a page about this song for part of my senior project if you care to read it.

Okay I was kinda' sorta' wrong ... I just read my paper again and this is what I wrote [about the history[:

"Orestes is a mythological character that supposedly murdered his mother and her lover after learning that she had cheated on her husband, [Agamemnon], shortly before, and following his murder. Maynard James Keenan, A Perfect Circle vocalist, wrote the lyrics to this song to express the bond between mother and child that can be broken, even though the mother-child link will always be genuinely inseperable."

I love Greek drama in music, haha. Dream Theater mentions Cassandra (related to the same story as Orestes) in a song of theirs. That sounds interesting.
