How to apply liquid foundation

So I got Cover FX Water Based Foundation and as much as I like it, I know I'm wasting a lot of product in the way I apply it. I've been dotting it around where I need it, spreading it a little with my fingers, and when blending a little with a sponge because my fingers leave some streaks. I use waaaay more than I should when I do this.

I ordered a foundation brush but it hasn't come in the mail yet, so I'm stuck with this until next week. How can I apply without a brush in a way that will look good and not waste product? This stuff ain't cheap.

Also, when I DO get the foundation, how do I use a foundation brush? :/
