Zinc For Acne

Mar 01, 2013 09:30

I'm doing research here-and-there regardless, but wanted to find out if there were some first-hand accounts. Most of the memories were a bit old, and recent uses of the tag didn't seem as applicable for the answers I'm looking for.

My skin hasn't been clear since I used daily Proactiv a few years ago (of course it got messy again when I stopped). Primarily my cystic breakouts are happening on my chin, which of course means it's 99% hormones to blame. I'm on a birth control pill (generic Alesse), but it's a low dose, and regardless I've never actually had any improvement in my acne no matter what dose of birth control or type of hormones I've been on. Hormone issues run rampant in the ladies of my family, though, so that isn't surprising. Going off the birth control isn't an option as endometriosis and ovarian cysts are also common in my family, and periods are far too painful to deal with, so I stack my pills with no breaks (as per doctor).

I do have the nail white spots and some other symptoms of a zinc deficiency. I don't have food allergies (except perhaps soy milk, but other soy additives don't seem to aggravate things as much as the milk does).

So, has anyone taken zinc as a treatment for hormonal cystic acne before, did it work, and if so, what dose were you taking?

Thanks in advance!
