Narcissa knocked three times on the heavy wooden door of her husband's study. It was just past midnight and she had not seen him since they had eaten a quick and silent dinner. She had packed and sent new school robes to her son and retired to read in the bedroom after that, so she had thought nothing of her husband's absence until she had heard faintly the midnight chime of the clock that hung in the entrance hall. It had occurred to her then that he had been in the study all evening, and how many times lately had he spent all evening locked away with whatever business he had, not coming to bed until long after she had fallen asleep?

She knocked again.

"Lucius?" she called. There were voices in the study, she realised, and spoke quickly. "I'll wait, not too long, I hope."

She had just take a seat to wait for him in the lounge when he had appeared in the doorway. He looked as weary as he often had in recent weeks.

"It's past twelve o'clock," Narcissa said. He inclined his head.

"I will be with you in bed soon. First I must-"

"Lucius, stop. Please, stop it."

He met her eyes without a word and she smiled fondly. Both he and their son gave the same expression when they did not quite understand what somebody was saying.

"It won't be long and it will be dawn. It seems you've done nothing at all lately but organise some things and worry about others."

Lucius paused to think for just a moment. "Draco is-"

"Fine," Narcissa finished. "He wrote just the other day. You read the letter, and he's as well as always. I've just sent him some new robes."

"There are things that you don't know, that you don't understand. My worries are not unfounded." Her husband's frown worried her.

"I would know, Lucius, if you would tell me those things."

"I-"

"Can't. I know you can't, so I only hope that one day you will be able to share your burdens with me, but tonight, what could possibly be so pressing that you can't sit with a glass of wine and your wife?"

Lucius offered a small smile, and it was the first time that Narcissa had seen such a thing in more weeks than she cared to count. "Only my mind," he said. "Where is that wine?"

Narcissa reached up to touch her husband's cheek and smiled. "I'll pour us some. Red?"

"Anything."
