I'm glad I finally found you. I don't know if you would remembe me or not, it isn't as if I introduced myself. I was one of a pair of girls that were in pinstriped pantsuits instead of lolita garb. I had a gray fedora. Don't know if that helps. My name is Sariah, I live in Lincoln. I have, in fact, looked more into lolita culture since then, and have gleaned a greater understanding. Well, to a degree. I've learned how to recognize several of the diffrent catagories of lolita. I lack experience interacting with them. It has been my misfortune to mostly only run into them at cons. Usually they are very young and snobbish, which is why I hadn't given the culture much thought before. I'm simply too old for that kind of attitude. This is also why your maturity and attention to detail impressed me so much. It makes me glad to know the entire culture can't be quantified so easily.

My interest in lolita culture has mostly been a secret from everyone except my sister. I've been a tomboy my whole life, mostly because I haven't felt comfortable expressing my own femininity. Some of the things you said made a lot of sense. I have the desire now, but I don't know how to move forward from here. Quiet study behind my computer monitor is one thing, but it does little for me, beyond gathering book knowlege.

Sariah~

Believe it or not, I do remember you. Your outfit stood out in my mind because I love the Rat Pack era and that seemed to be the look you were trying for. I liked it ^_^

I agree with you that most con Lolitas are young and very snobbish. I have run into more than one group that I have a hard time keeping my comments to myself about.

I am 23 myself, and by next Nebraskon will be 24. This style is actually for an older group, a chance to indulge in the fantastic and wonder that we took for granted when it was so accessible to us in our youth.

That isn't all there is to Lolita, but it's a small sparkle of a larger star. Much like Zen, it is impossible to explain because everyone experiences it differently.

But be that as it man, if you'd ever like someone else to talk to, I am always here to chit chat as well as offer my knowledge and advice if ever wanted ^_^

May I ask what style of Lolita you've been drawn to the most? Sweet Lolita is easiest to find and is most obtainable because most girls perceive changing to Lolita automatically means swathing ones self in pastel pink and poodles, but that isn't always the case.

Gothic, Punk, Aristocratic, Pirate, It's all up to you, that's what I love about this fashion, it's so personal. There are even more tomboy-ish styles if you're not quite ready for the pastel explostion just yet ^_~*

I was the shorter of the two of us. Although my sister is also a plus size, she has never had a problem expressing herself, ever. Makes me a bit jealous, actually. She's been as big a help as she can. Actually, she made me a wonderful lolita shirt out of a repurposed flanel shirt. I was big into the punk and grunge movement when I was a kid, so that is likely where I would feel more comfortable. You also mentioned I believe, a newer style that was more subdued. I may be jumbling words, but was it called Morii? Something like that? That sounded interesting. I like pink well enough, but I'm not too big into yards and yards of pastels. I prefer them as more of an accent. I'm 27, and I feel too much cutesy would look a bit off on me.

The style of clothing I have found I look absolutely stellar in is sixties fashon. I don't know of any lolita styles that match that, but my sister is a fashion designer, and I have the spark as well sometmes. I've put three designs on paper, but I don't know how to make them, or if they would be accepted, or make me a laughingstock.

You will come to realize that I blather a lot. I'm sorry for it, I can't seem to help it.

Um, shoes. Are maryjanes the only acceptable shoes?

Hello~

I like the punk look, used to be goth-ish myself...still am from time to time. I think you'll make a wonderful Punk Lolita ^_^

Sadly, there are not any Lolita fashions that fit the 60's Mod look, mainly due to the shapes being all wrong and not meshing well. But if you ever are able to make it work I'd bee intrigued to see it.

I'd love to see your designs. I draw and sew my own skirts and dresses, so I'm always excited to see what other people come up with. And as I've said before, Fashion is personal and sure Lolita has stricter guidelines than most fashions, but as long as you're happy, that's all that matters, because in the end you're not wearing your clothes to please others.

I did mention another style during the panel called Mori. In Japanese, 'Mori' translates to 'Forest', thus the look centers around subdued colors and natural fibers as well as designs and patterns.

Mori girls wear lots of layers, which is why my Mother is drawn to it so much. It's a more free style and a good vacation look when you want to be lazy, but still look stylish.

To answer your foot wear question, no. Maryjanes are not the only shoes accepted with Lolita, though they tend to go with everything.

Granny boots, cute flats with bows,...any show with bows actually..., Double deckers/rocking horse shoes, even sneakers are alright as long as the match your outfit.

Some girls may get picky about your shoes, saying that only Rocking Horse shoes with ballet lacing is acceptable, but trust your instincts.

I'll be honest, I wear simple flipflops with my skirts sometimes. They are comfortable and great for running to Walmart in. I even have a pair I am planning to hot glue giant yellow flowers on for my May meet up.

Here is the first of my tentantive designs.

I kept the lolita shapes, and attempted to express the sixties feel through patterns and accessories instead. I need more practice though.

I looked up several Brand sites, and I am drawn alternately to punk and clasic lolita. The more I look, the more I am leaning toward classic, but I don't think I need to limit myself to just one style.

Hello~

Yes, there was to be a May meet up, but I find the need to cancel it due to being accepted for a two week study course with an Artist friend of mine. So the meet up will now be held in June and I'll make sure to get further information on it to you if you like ^_^

I don't have a skirt. I have several shirts that will do just fine, but I have no suitable skirt. Nothing but a white A-line that falls to mid-shin, and no petticoat of any sort.

Do you have distressed jeans or Bondage pants? That's acceptable for a good punk look and your a-line with a nice shirt would be ok for a beginner as well. As long as you look nice and polished, no one will say anything.

You should see some of my beginning pictures, they were awful! The only thing I did right was not wear cat ears or a collar with a bell. ^^;

Say, can you tell me a bit more about Mori? You said it had lots of layers. Forgive my ignorance, but I thought most lolta styles had lots of layers, what with the underwear under the petticoat under the dress or skirt over the blouse and all...Also, when talking colors of nature, are we only talking greens, browns, ane neutrals? Or are the colors of Autumn leaves, or Spring flowers also acceptable? What of patterns? Or the shape? Is it Classic shaped, which has appeared to me to be a bit less poofy than say, Sweet, and sometimes longer? Is it faux fur trim instead of ruffles? Natural fabrics only, or any fabric, so long as it has a natural look?

I've gone through my closet, and I think my best combination so far is my white, ankle-length a-line skirt, a very proper looking short sleeved black blouse, and possibly, a few red bows for a colorful accent. How does that sound?

I think that would be fine. I'm sure you'll look lovely. If you like, we can talk a little more deeply about various fashions while at the meet.

I began thinking on what you said about Wa-lolita outfits, and trying to add a touch of lace to my yukata, without actually sewing anything to it. My sister suggested making a light, lace lined under-kimono, or lace edged under-collar. I also recently found out about obi brooches, and kanzashi, and I think they are a very good sounding idea.

I've got a question though. My boyfriend's mom(bless her for trying this.) made me a furisode style kimono as a present. Two unfortunate things about it; first, it's too small to close properly in the front, and second, it's in a shiny, satiny Chinese print. I didn't have the heart to tell her, and it does look pretty, and I would like to repurpose it. Do you think I could make a wa-lolita outfit out of it? Or are there too many strikes against it as a whole?

May I see a picture of the outfit? I am never one to say 'no' right away. With the right crafting almost anything is possible.

As for your Yukata, a lace trimmed lining would be perfect. It wouldn't harm something so precious to you and would give you a striking Lolita look as well.

I have a site that instructs on DIY kanzashi, if you'd like the link. Wa lolita is a dream of mine, but I'm still searching for the right material.

It was -such- a pleasure to see you again at the meet up. You were such a treat to hang out with and so funny. I hope you and your Jason (hopefully that's right) can attend again. I'll be announcing the dates on the Comm soon, but I'll tell you now just so you can get a jump start on informing those on your end.

We will be meeting on the 17th, at 12:30.

I am still working out the details, but the date is set.
