Easier Without

Look, Grace!  It's a fic!  *teases*

Title:  Easier Without
Characters:  Ten, mentions of all three of his female companions
Timey-Wimey Factor:  Set any time you like between Journey's End and End of Time.  No specific spoilers.
Summary:  Life is easier without them.
Rating/Warning/Notes:  Rated G.  A teeny bit of angst (as in the fic is teeny and it is all angst.)  Written on a whim.

Life is easier without them, he decides.

Every morning when he gets up (not that he sleeps much anyway, but no matter) there are no chocolate chip pancakes, and he has to make his coffee himself.  He lives off bananas and toast, and he can’t remember the last time he’s eaten anything that couldn’t be zapped with the sonic.  But there’s no shouting for him to do dishes, no red hair and blue pajamas shoving him at the fridge to get her some orange juice, and that’s good.  That’s easier.  Besides, he doesn’t need to eat that much anyway.  He’s not that skinny.

He’s alone on adventures too, of course, saving this planet or that civilization.  Of course there’s no one to hold his hand or to bounce ideas off of or to hold him back when he gets a bit too full of righteous indignation, but he doesn’t have to rescue anyone either.  No one gets trapped in an escape pod or is kidnapped by murdering priestesses or just plain wanders off by herself, and that makes saving the world a whole lot easier.

The TARDIS is quieter too.  No raucous laughter or taunts of ‘you can’t drive, Spaceman’ -no flattery over his driving skills either- and no covert attempts to earn a spot on the ship for just that little bit longer.  There’s no one leaving their top hanging over the railing in the console room or littering the controls with her jewelry or trying to teach herself how to drive when he’s not looking.  The TARDIS is cold and a bit dark, but that’s how he likes it.  Besides, humans are notoriously messy and the TARDIS does hate to tidy up.  This is easier for both of them.

The Doctor is all on his own, constantly wandering the universe with no one at his side but his own belief that it should stay this way, that life is better without someone alongside him.

Life is easier without them, he decides.  But it’s definitely not better.
