["take a kid to the game" night]
"D".... she was my KiD. She was like any normal kid would be at first, shy n quiet, not much to say. We walked around for a long time and slowly but surely she was talking more and more. I asked her everything and anything that came to mind. Whats your fav. color? Do you wanna be a Red Raider when you're bigger? Do you have brothers or sisters? Those short, usual questions. It got quiet for a couple of seconds, game hadn't started and a commercial came out on the big screen in Jones Stadium. It was promoting our sales for "Raider Aid" ... a Hurrican Katrina support system. And I looked over to her to ask her if she had heard about it and all... another start for a conversation. Then I realized her head was down....
"D" has been here in lubbock for two weeks. Her sisters in Houston, sheleterd there, and her and her parents are here in Lubbock. She told me her entire experience. How water was everywhere. Helocopters were the only escape. They are starting from scratch. They struggle. They dont have much food. She lost everything but her family.
We've all seen in to TV but to sit there with an 11 yr. old girl and have her turn to you. It was amazing. She went on and on. I felt like I was her escape to soo much that had been kept inside. I embraced her with all I had. WE HAD A GREAT GREAT NIGHT! I gotta say, I wouldnt have replaced tonight for anything. Reaching out and showing her a good time has deffinately placed a smile on my face. Thankful. At peace. Happy.
