i really admire my little sister

my little sister, rebekah, is someone that i truly admire. i'd even say i look up to her. she is one tough kid. she rocks.

to explain some, i'll start at the beginning, i suppose. my little sister was born on my birthday when i was turning 7 yrs old. this was about the same time that my older brother, justin, was adopted. he's only three months older than me, so he and i automatically were kinda mean to each other, i guess, cuz we were peers. i mean, we weren't really MEAN to each other, but we'd challenge each other all the time. you know, the who can do this better than the other type stuff. but one thing that he did, that i didn't, was be mean to the younger siblings in a harmful way.

when rebekah was only a year or two old, he was pretty mean. one time, justin pushed her down the stairs to our basement, which were cement with just a little bit of carpet on them. sometimes, when our folks would go out grocery shopping when we were a little bit older (about 10 or 11), justin would beat up on all of us. he would sometimes get all crazy acting like he was gonna hit us with metal objects like pipes, and i remember one time he was threatening us with these things, and rebekah was still little, so she didn't entirely understand that this wasn't a time where a hug wouldn't make things better, and he took her and threw her up against the wall, holding her by her neck. she was probably about 3 or 4 years old, so i was scared beyond belief when i saw him squeezing her throat and pushing her head against the cabinet. i can still remember it very vividly.

over the years, he would always hurt us like that. i don't know how bad he was to her as the years went on, cuz he would make sure none of us would tell anyone else, cuz he'd threaten to hurt us more. (ei: he used to stab my little brother's legs with pins and nails and staples, and none of us knew this until recently)

either way, i admire rebekah because she grew up like that--that was all she knew. not knowing how safe we were each day and just hoping that we'd actually wake up each morning in one piece and that everyone else was that way, too.

not only did she face all that bravely, but she is now working hard to become good at all she does. she gets straight A's in school and she has been working at ice skating for several years, and has been doing dance classes, as well. she is advancing faster than many in ice skating, and has been asked to join a group where she would learn to be REALLY good and be seen by special people who might put her in the olympics. she also does swimming in the summers, and is very good at that. she usually places really well, and she constantly comes home with new awards and patches.

she is so mature for someone her age. i can talk to her about the craziest stuff that i couldn't talk to my 16 year old sister about. (rebekah is currently 11 years old)

anyways, i really admire my little sister--sometimes i wonder if she was supposed to be the older sister. she'd have been the best older sister ever. she is truly someone i'd like to look up to.
