A few weeks ago, the middle of summer when we first got the cottage, I saw a horse grazing by the side of the road. The next time I was up, I found out that the horse was one of four that resided in a barn. There's a longer story here, but I can't type it out right now. I'm not sure if I already said this before.
S and I visited a lot, every time we went up. We also met a cat we called Graceton with huge, yellow eyes, skinny as could be. Fed her dog food (the only kind we had) and fed the horses carrots. The trainer of the horses knew about us as well.
I don't want to forget their names. Whistler, a chestnut gelded male softy. Summer, protective brown mommy. Montana, two year old brown daughter of Summer. And Dakota, 5 week old chestnut daughter of Summer, now 9/10 weeks old.
Graceton was a small grey cat with a white underbelly and white paws. She always got gravy all over her face when we fed her wet food. And, as I said, had impossibly huge and impossibly yellow eyes. Purred a storm no matter what.
Today the owner, who had met us the day before and said it was fine we hang around, as long as we don't go into the pens (due to lawsuits and all), rescinded his welcome. We're not supposed to go up to the barn anymore. We can only see the horses if they are grazing by the road. We'll not see Graceton, as she hangs about the barn and won't come to us by the side of the road- and that would be bad as well, because of cars.
I'm the most struck by this. I'd grown attached to the horses and the cat so quickly- they're animals, it's what happens when I meet animals. Humans can come and go, but animals I cling to. And now I won't be able to see them. Dakota and Summer don't far from the barn, and Montana and Whistler hardly ever graze by the road.
They were the only things that kept me going to the cottage. Now that's gone. The only hope is to find the trainer and get his email, request for him to keep us updated on the horses' progress, especially Dakota's. But I've only seen him twice in all these weeks. What are the chances to see him again, especially with Co-op starting and my schedule for it Tuesday-Saturday?
Those kids who live there, they have so much, not just horses. And they won't know how lucky they are.
