Chapter Ten- Twist And Shout

A woman contently hummed to herself as she quickly swept the rag across the polished counters, mopping away any trace of invisible debris. After a moment, she smirked victoriously as she peeked at the shining surface, pleased at the fact that she could see her reflection.   Then, she scowled a bit as she noticed that a strand of hair had escaped from its curled place, and she lifted a hand and smoothed the stubborn tress back into the chin-length bob.

She stepped away from the counters, tossing the rag onto a hook that was positioned underneath the small sink behind her, and lightly dusted herself off.  Straightening the white shirt that was beneath her black, halter-styled vest, her eyes quickly glanced over the silver buttons of her vest before she made sure her dark-colored jeans were not caught in one of the backs of her black flats.

The woman quickly spun around as she heard a clattering sound, and she smiled as she stepped out of the way of a tall, athletic-looking girl.

“Need any help?” She asked the taller blonde, who smiled at her as she set the tub of glasses on the counter by the empty racks.

“Eh, sure, Bri. It’s your bar, y’know.”  Melina Evans pushed a wavy strand of short hair behind her ear before she began to easily hang the glasses on the racks above her head.

“Well…” Brianna Epstein smiled warmly at Mel.  “You seem to be doing just fine…”

Mel laughed, bobbing her head slightly as Brianna spun around to look at her newer employee, who was sorting through the selection of songs at the D.J. booth.  Denelle Aspinall set down the song-list and looked over to where her boss and co-worker stood behind the bar.

Brianna grinned, waving her hand at the brown-haired woman, who nodded obediently and stepped out of the D.J. booth.  The girl quickly straightened her blue sleeveless turtleneck, pulling her ponytail out of the back of the shirt before moving towards the bar, her black mid-length skirt ruffling as she walked.

“Hey, Brianna?” Mel beckoned as she turned to face her manager after setting the last glass onto the rack.  She looked towards the entrance of the nightclub, and then eyed Brianna.  “Should I open up now?”

Brianna glanced at her watch, and then nodded.

“Yeah, it’s almost time to open anyway; oh, while you’re at it, get the boys to start letting people in the club in five, all right?” She said in a businesslike tone.

Mel nodded, and after putting the empty tub underneath the bar, she hurried out of the bar and into the short hallway to the employee lounge.

Nelle leant against the bar as Brianna smiled at her again.

“Bri, how busy is it usually on Thursday nights?”

Brianna shrugged as she also leaned against the other side of the bar.

“Not terribly busy; Fridays and Saturdays are usually the busiest nights…”

Mel stepped back into the room, followed by a small trickle of early clubbers.

“C’mon, let’s serve our customers, all right?”  Brianna motioned for the group of patrons to order their drinks.

Nelle nodded as she and Mel both walked behind the counters, and the clubbers moved towards the bar.  The three women all aimed easily convincing smiles at their customers as they ordered their beverages.

A few minutes flew by as the three women filled up a group of orders.

Mel finished pouring the last drink for the orders.

“All right, green dress.” Mel called, and a somewhat stout, lighter-haired brunette, dressed in a cute kelly-green dress, looked over at her.  “You ordered the scotch?”  The girl nodded and softly smiled in a gesture of thanks as Mel slid her the beverage.

“Who ordered the Martini?” Nelle asked, holding up a glass with an olive in it.

A blonde, petite but with long legs, in an asymmetrical black dress, coolly glanced over at Nelle, who almost questioned the girl’s age.

“That’s mine.” The small, thin woman calmly replied, the voice sounding higher than most women.

But when Nelle looked at the woman’s piercing green eyes, she immediately realized that the girl was probably one of the older ones among her group of friends, and handed the drink to the woman.

And so, Brianna, Nelle, and Mel continued to serve the drinks until all of the people within the group of clubbers were satisfied, wandering away to mingle in the center of the room.

Brianna’s eyebrow rose expectantly as one of the men, whom she had hired as bouncers for the Blue Tango, came lurching towards the bar.

“Ben.” She leaned over the counter, eyeing the tall, muscled man carefully.  “What’s the matter?”

“Ms. Epstein,” The man started, looking at her with hardened eyes.  “Johnelle Lennon is outside, should we let her in?”

Brianna’s eyes widened as Nelle glanced confusedly at Mel.

“J-Johnelle is here?”  She softly hissed out, and the man nodded.  She uttered a curse word underneath her breath, closed her eyes for a moment, and then looked back at Ben.  She curtly nodded, sending the man back to his station.

Nelle glanced at Mel, and then looked at her boss.

“Er… Brianna?”

Brianna turned to look at her two employees.

“Yes, Nelle?”

“Who’s Johnelle?”

Mel shared a look with Brianna, and then moved to hide the fragile objects in the bar.

“Mel,” Brianna started.  “You want to tell Nelle?”

Mel looked over at her employer.

“Why? I don’t think it’s really my place to…”

“You know how to describe Johnelle better than I do.” Brianna interjected hastily.

Mel blinked, and then put the glass bottle back onto the shelf behind her.

“Johnelle…” Mel began, thinking for a moment before continuing. “Johnelle is basically one of the craziest people you’ll ever meet.” She paused before she started again.  “Whenever she comes around, it’s pretty much guaranteed the night will be anything but a drag.”

Brianna decided to chime in at that point as she leant towards the counters of the bar.

“And not in a good way.”  She tilted her attention to Mel.  “I’ll need you working security tonight as well, Mel.  Sorry for double-working you.”

Mel nodded.

“No problem, Brianna.”  Mel politely assuaged as she moved out onto the other side of the bar, heading towards the entrance of the room.

Johnelle suddenly appeared at the entryway with a strong hand on Pauline’s shoulder.  Mel paused in her movements as the tawny-haired newcomer moved away from the pretty, dark-haired girl.

Brianna noted that Rachie Starkey had a hand on the arm of a tall woman with darker hair, looking as if she were coaxing her friend into the club with the use of a gentle touch.

Johnelle quickly walked towards the center of the room, and then threw her arms up into the air flamboyantly.

“I’M HE-ERE!” She cawed out, her hazel eyes glinting as she thrust her arms out to the sides of her body.  “NOW WHERE ARE MY BITCHES?!”

Several of the clubbers, who were loosely huddled in a wide circle, chuckled as Johnelle thrust her hips in a sexually suggestive way towards the bar.

Brianna grimaced as she put her head into her hands while Mel chuckled and Nelle watched.  Brianna then lifted her head, sighing wearily, as she directed her attention back to Johnelle, who was now stalking over towards the bar, a hand once again curled around the girl in the blue dress’ shoulder.  In the background, the DJ was beginning to set up the musical arrangement for the evening.

“Hello, Johnelle…” Brianna greeted as Johnelle grinned at Brianna, dropping her hand from her pretty friend’s shoulder, and leapt over the counters of the bar.  The tawny-haired woman grabbed the cuff of Brianna’s shirt, yanking the older woman into a hug.

Johnelle let go, and turned to Mel while Brianna smoothed out the invisible wrinkles in her shirt.  She immediately jumped into the blonde woman’s arms, grinning impishly as she batted her eyelashes.

“Oh, Mellie!” She cawed out in a mock-feminine voice in a falsetto tone.  “You’re still the same ol’ naughty girl!”

Mel chuckled as she put Johnelle down on the ground.

“I guess I am; guess I am…” She smiled at the shorter woman.  “How you’ve been, Johnnie?”

Johnelle laughed, and then cleared her throat as she turned towards the dance floor.

“NOW THAT THE GUEST OF HONOUR HAS ARRIVED…”

“More like the Guest of Horrors…”

“You keep wishing, Eppy!” Johnelle barbed with a devilish smile.

Mel and Nelle chuckled as Johnelle jumped over the counters again. She pulled Pauline close to her again.

“LET THE PARTY START!”

At the particular moment, the music began to blast, and Johnelle grinned.

“Damn…” She breathed out, smoothing a stray river of tawny hair behind her right ear.  “I’m fuckin’ brilliant.”

Georgina, standing a small distance behind Johnelle and Pauline, scowled disapprovingly, and then leaned towards Rachie, who was next to her, tapping her foot in time with the beat of the music.

“Is she always like this?”  The taller brunette hissed, and Rachie chuckled, her cheeks a faint pink.

“Oh yeah…” Rachie answered, bobbing her head. “You really get used to it after a while…”

Georgina scoffed skeptically, reaching up to brush a river of hair off of her left eye.

“HEY-NO-DON’T YOU DARE!” Johnelle rambled out in a loud voice, glaring at Georgina, who had her hand frozen by her hair and a freaked out expression on her face. “Don’t you touch the hair! If you move just one piece of hair, I’m shaving it all off! No touchie!”

Georgina dropped her hand, staring at Johnelle incredulously, and Rachie gently grabbed Georgina’s hand.  The shorter woman started to lead them towards the dance floor.

“Hey…” The blue-eyed female smiled up at Georgina, who blushed a little.  “Why don’t we go dance?”

Georgina’s cheeks flared a little redder, and Rachie paused, tilting her head at Georgina.

“What; don’t know how to dance?” Rachie quipped.

Georgina thought for a moment, looking over her shoulder at Johnelle and Pauline, who were captured in a conversation with Brianna, Mel, and Nelle.  She looked back at Rachie.

“I… dunno what kinda of dancing’s right for places like this…”

Rachie giggled as she and Georgina walked towards the center of the dance floor as the song played its last verse of music.

“Well, you go to school dances, right?” She asked, and Georgina nodded.

“Yeah.”

“And concerts?”

Georgina shrugged.

“When I get the money to go…”

Rachie hummed as the intro to “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” infiltrated the air.

“Well, think of the dancing at those, and you’ll do all right…” Rachie explained.

She and Georgina swayed their hips, and shuffled their legs from side to side a bit as they danced to the song.

Georgina looked at Rachie shyly.

“By… By the way, you look nice in purple…” She bashfully said, and Rachie smiled brightly in a flattered manner.

“You’re not too bad-looking in red.” Rachie complimented, and Georgina grinned widely.

“Thanks.”

Rachie laughed.

“It’s true!”

The two girls continued to dance.

“So…” Rachie started. “You and Pauline are friends?”

Georgina nodded.

“Yeah; people don’t get how Pauline and I are best friends…” She smiled.  “We’re very different.”  She paused, looking at Pauline, who was animatedly talking with a happier-looking Brianna, and rolled her eyes at Johnelle, who was engaged in a poking war with Mel and Nelle.  She looked back at Rachie. “Pauline loves to be the center of attention… I’m more of a… loner.” Rachie laughed a bit at Georgina’s comment, and Georgina smiled before continuing.  “But we’re the best of friends.”

Rachie chuckled, discreetly looking over at Johnelle, who was now jumping up and ruffling Mel’s hair as Mel and Nelle laughed, both women trying to fend the auburn-haired girl’s hands away from Mel’s hair.

“I know what you mean…” The blue-eyed girl said, looking back at her dance partner. “Johnelle and I are best friends, though she and I are as different as Day and Night.”

Georgina slowly nodded.

“That’s… a good way to put it.”

A male clubber, who had been dancing with a pretty redhead behind Rachie, suddenly stumbled over his own feet. He briefly fell backwards, bumping Rachie harshly.

“OH!” The smaller girl yelped out as she was pushed into Georgina’s arms.

“HEY, WATCH IT!” Georgina shouted, and the guy looked apologetically at the two girls before running after the redhead that he had been dancing with.

Rachie blushed, and Georgina flushed as well, but she still held the older brunette in her arms tightly.

“Hey…” Georgina softly said, looking down at Rachie.  “You all right?”

Rachie licked her lips, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear before looking up to meet Georgina’s eyes.

“Y-Yeah…” She breathed out.

Georgina and Rachie stared at each other, unconsciously leaning in towards each other.  Their eyes slowly fluttered close as their lips hovered mere inches away from each other.

“HEY!” Johnelle’s voice suddenly shattered the moment, which made Georgina and Rachie both snap out of their trances.  “LOVEBIRDS!”

Georgina sneered at Johnelle as Rachie laughed.  Georgina relunctantly let go of Rachie, and together, they left the dance floor, heading towards the bar.

Johnelle, now standing behind the bar once more, puckered her lips comically at Georgina, making smooching noises.

Georgina scowled as Rachie weakly smiled.

“Shut up!” The taller brunette growled out.

Johnelle grinned, and then laughed as she turned towards the large selection of bottles in the bar.

“Tell me what your taste buds are like!” Johnelle said, and Pauline, who had been standing by one of the bar stools, looked confused.

Pauline blinked cutely, tilting her head.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

Johnelle fingered various bottles that were on the shelf in front of her, squinting at the labels.  She then looked over her shoulder, giving an intense look to Pauline, who squirmed a bit, feeling embarrassed.

“Favourite flavors, luv…” She drawled out lazily.

“Oh,” Pauline nodded in a naïve way. “I really like fruity stuff…”

Johnelle smirked, and then looked over at Georgina, who seemed apprehensive.

“What about you, Squirrelly?”

Georgina bristled at the name, but then, glanced over to Rachie, who was being served a drink by Brianna.   Rachie took a sip of her drink, and then met Georgina’s uncertain eyes.

Rachie smiled warmly at the younger but taller girl.

“I’m betting you like simple, huh?”  She guessed.

Georgina quietly shrugged.

“Yeah, whatever.”

“Well, let’s do you first, Scruffy.”  Johnelle looked at Georgina, and then grabbed a shot-glass, setting it on the counter in front of Georgina.  She grabbed a large, square-shaped bottle, and poured a clear liquid into the glass.  She pushed it towards Georgina, making the small glass tap against the younger girl’s hands.

“Well, Scruffy; drink!” Johnelle egged, and Georgina slowly picked up the glass, sniffing it and then looking at Johnelle warily.  The drink smelled bitter, almost minty, and Georgina was suspicious. “Drink!”

Georgina pressed the rim of the drink to her lips, and then cautiously tipped it back, letting the liquid splash into her mouth.   She swallowed quickly, and then scrunched up her face as she glared at the glass in her hand. She gagged and then put the glass on the counter.

“Okay; no on that.” Johnelle said, taking the glass and literally tossing the remains of the drink over her shoulder, which earned a shout of disapproval from Brianna.  Johnelle just grinned, and ruffled the bartender’s hair.

Brianna squawked and smoothed her hair out nervously as Johnelle poured see-through liquid from a different bottle into the glass, and gave it to Georgina.

“Here.”

“No way.”  Georgina hissed out, glaring at Johnelle, who returned the leer.

Johnelle then rolled her eyes.

Rachie then put a hand on Georgina’s hand, which made the taller girl look at her.

“We just want you and Pauline to join in on the fun…” She nodded her head at the crowd near them.

The crowd was cheering on a couple of girls who were gulping down shots of tequila like champions.

Rachie then pointed a ringed finger at the people dancing.

Georgina glanced at the glass, and then grabbed it, slowly sipping at it.

Georgina gagged again, this time, clutching at her throat as she looked at Johnelle with wide eyes.

“OH GOD!” She exclaimed. “WHAT’S IN THIS? GASOLINE?”

Rachie hid her smile behind her hand as Mel reached down below the counters and grabbed a bottle out of a case, popped the cap off, and grabbed a beer mug from the other counter. She poured the amber-colored liquid into the glass, and pushed it towards Georgina in a gentle manner.

“Here, try this… It’s one of the best brands we have here…” She offered, and Georgina, wanting to rid her mouth of the bitter taste of the two drinks she tried, grasped the glass and sipped it.

Georgina’s eyebrows rose, and she sipped more of the drink, nodding.

“This is good…” She gulped down another drag of the liquid before continuing. “I like this.”

Mel grinned, pouring the rest of the bottle into the mug.

“Enjoy!”

Johnelle suddenly snapped her fingers, and whispered something into Brianna’s ear, and the other woman nodded.  Brianna got out the necessary ingredients for Johnelle’s request and started mixing them as Johnelle walked out of the bar and towards Pauline.

Johnelle moved next to Pauline, and placed an arm around Pauline’s shoulder, pulling the girl closer to her.

Brianna finished making the drink, which was orange-yellow in color, and handed it to Johnelle, who passed it into Pauline’s hands.

Pauline looked at the drink, and then sipped it. She thought about the taste before sipping it again.

“Mmm…” She looked up at Johnelle, who was smirking at her.  “This is pretty good; what’s this called?”

“Sex on The Beach.” Johnelle revealed bluntly.  “Which we’ll be doing sometime.”

Pauline spluttered on her latest draw of her drink, her face red.

Johnelle grinned.

“W-What? S-Sex on the B-Beach!” The darker-haired girl babbled out, and Johnelle feigned a look of scandalized shock.

“Why, Paulie! Now?” She teased out. “You naughty girl!”

Pauline’s face flared to a darker red as Rachie giggled and Georgina rolled her dark eyes towards the ceiling.

“Unbelievable…” The taller girl groaned.

Johnelle turned to retort to Georgina’s comment, but then, her ears perked up at a familiar strain to the beginning of a song. She smiled brilliantly.

“OH YES!” She shouted, and everyone at the bar looked at her as she threw her arms into the air. “This is my song!”  She explained as she struck a pose at the beginning riff before the lyrics, and then she started to sing.

“Oooh, Oooh, Oooh, Oooh…” She crooned out smoothly as she danced past Rachie.  “Oooh, Oooh, Oooh, Oooh,” She passed Georgina.  “Oooh, Oooh, Oooh, Oooh…” She hummed out as she tucked a hand underneath Pauline’s chin and looked at the girl. Then She let go and swayed her hips from side to side, her movements strikingly similar to a feline’s.

“Black and orange stray cat sittin' on a fence
Ain't got enough dough to pay the rent
I'm flat broke but I don't care…”

Johnelle then marched past Pauline and Georgina.

“I strut right by with my tail in the air…”

She coyly looked over her shoulder at Pauline before turning and grabbing onto Rachie’s hand to tug the older girl into a tango pose. She led them slowly out towards the center of the room, their faces side to side.

“Stray cat strut, I'm a ladies' cat.”

Johnelle led Rachie out in a dramatic, fast-step back towards the bar.

“A feline Casanova, hey man, that’s where it’s at.”

Johnelle grinded her hips against Rachie’s as they twirled around.

“Get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man.”

Johnelle quickly and smoothly dipped Rachie back, as if they were ducking from a thrown object.

“Get my dinner from a garbage can.”

Johnelle smoothly and slowly straightened up with Rachie, and they danced a quick-step.

Georgina simmered as she watched Johnelle and Rachie dance, and Pauline, being served a second drink, giggled at the angry look on her best friend’s face.

“Yeah, don't cross my path!”

Johnelle looked straight at Georgina as she sang that line, and Georgina visibly bristled at the leering grin on the tawny-haired woman’s face.

Johnelle twirled Rachie around twice, and then pressed her against her body, and they slinked around the dance floor, slipping around other dancing couples.

“I don't bother chasing mice around…”

Johnelle stepped forward quickly, and then stepped backwards, spinning Rachie out of her arms, and back into her grasp, as if Rachie were a yoyo.

“I slink down the alley, looking for a fight…”

Johnelle hunkered her body over Rachie’s, making the other girl bend backwards, and they sidestepped towards Georgina and Pauline.

“Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night…”

Johnelle moved her upper body, with Rachie following flawlessly, in a circular fashion as they did a box step.

“Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry…”

Johnelle spun Rachie out and in again.

"Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy."

Johnelle did a cha-cha step with Rachie, heading towards Georgina and Pauline once more, and then spinning dramatically and heading back towards the dance floor.

“I wish I could be as carefree and wild…”

Johnelle did almost a tap toe-ball-heel as she waltzed with Rachie, and then she and Rachie paused in a dramatic tango pose.

“But I got cat class and I got cat style.”

Johnelle and Rachie did a waltzing quickstep as they moved around the couples once more.

“I don't bother chasing mice around…
I slink down the alley looking for a fight…
Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night…
Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry,
“Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy.””

Then Johnelle spun Rachie out and then grabbed Rachie.

“I wish I could be as carefree and wild…
But I got cat class and I got cat style…”

At the last line and as the song faded with a dramatic flourish, Johnelle bent Rachie over, the smaller girl’s body nearly split in half as they ended their “dance”.

Pauline clapped enthusiastically as Georgina sneered at Johnelle, who, with her chest heaving, leered down at Rachie’s face.

“Hey, Rings…” She panted out.  “You’re still great at this…” She then stared at Rachie’s assets. “And those too.”

Rachie breathlessly laughed, and she smiled at Johnelle as the other girl helped her up.

Georgina, moodily nursing her beer while Pauline got another refill on her drink, scowled at Johnelle as the two other girls joined them.

“Could you be any more obvious?” Georgina groused out, and Johnelle smirked.

“You’re just jealous…”

Georgina rolled her eyes, sipping at her beer again, with a faint blush on her face, as Rachie stood next to her, being handed a drink by Brianna.

Pauline, another “Sex On The Beach” in her hand, giggled at her friend, and Johnelle tugged her into a tight hold.  Pauline let Johnelle hold her, even smiling prettily at the auburn-haired woman.

Rachie, her face flushed from the dance, looked up at Georgina after a long drink from her beverage, and smiled.

“Hey, you look a little upset…” She said, and Georgina shook her head.

“Not really…”

Rachie placed a hand on Georgina’s back.

“I think Johnelle’s right…” Rachie started, smiling bemusedly at the taller girl. “I think you are jealous…” Georgina flushed, and Rachie outstretched a hand towards her. “If you want, I can show you how to dance like that…”

“N-No…” Georgina stammered out.  “That’s fine…”

“C’mon…” Rachie persisted, setting her drink on the bar counter. “It’ll be fun, just you and me…”

Georgina hesistated, putting her mug down, and stared at Rachie’s hand for a moment.

And then, she took her hand with a smile on her lips.

Rachie grinned back.

Johnelle catcalled jokingly at the two girls as they headed towards the dance floor as Pauline giggled, cuddling closer to Johnelle as a slow song, a rare moment for a club, came on.

Johnelle put her own drink on the bar, along with Pauline’s, and Pauline willingly let Johnelle lead her into a slow waltz.

Johnelle elegantly danced them towards the tables, and then let go of Pauline to pull out a chair.  She moved towards the girl, and offered her hand, which Pauline giggled but took. Like a gentleman at the Country Club, Johnelle eased Pauline into the chair, and then looked towards the bar, intending to signal Brianna, Mel or Nelle to bring future drinks to their table.

What she saw made her smile fall off of her face.

A tall, blonde woman, with angelic features, stepped over to the bar, dressed in a scarlet blouse and a black miniskirt with knee-high black boots.

Johnelle immediately recognized the woman, and she frowned.

“Shit.”

A/N: Sorry for the long hiatus! I had the outline for this chapter all written up but for some time, my brain wouldn’t let me write this all out. But it picked up quickly after I introduced Mel, Brianna, and Nelle, and it should be pretty obvious who’s who. I hope you enjoyed! :D
