I am a random reader, meaning I pick the books I read almost completely at random and usually due to word of mouth. I rarely focus on a genre, or a period but will read through an author or a series with gusto.
I've decided I would like a bit more focus. I'm not going to turn over a completely new leaf and suddenly get on the Oprah bandwagon, Globe & Mail or NYT bestsellers or 1001 books you must read before you die. My new list of "must-reads" are inspired by a movie.
I enjoy a few guilty pleasure movies (meaning they're horribly acted or written, but so much fun to watch). One of these movies is League of Extraordinary Gentlemen starring the lovely Sean Connery. I'll watch anything with that man in it, no matter how awful. The League is based on a graphic novel that follows the adventure of a group of Victorian fictional characters as they try to save the world. My reading list is now based on the novel from which these character come from.
So here's my summer reading list:
Character: Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery's character)
Book: King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard
Character: Captain Nemo
Book: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne (7.21.08)
Book: The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
Character: Dorian Gray
Book: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Character: Mina Harker
Book: Dracula by Bram Stoker (I've read this one before so won't count)
Character: Rodney Skinner
Book: The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells
Character: Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde
Book: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Character: Tom Sawyer
Book: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
