What should have happened yesterday: Christmas Carol should have been canceled with everybody's best interests in mind, so that actors and crew and patrons alike would not have to spend hours and hours on the icy streets in deadlock traffic while nearly a foot of snow piled up on the ground, and Ryan and I should have gone home and made soup and melty cheese sandwiches and hot chocolate and curled up in bed to watch the Office and Freaks and Geeks and then slept a lot.

What did happen yesterday: Christmas Carol went on as planned to a small, brave audience, but was delayed nearly 45 minutes as maybe 7 actors total were there on time, with several major actors running in literally minutes before the show went on, and 2 of my kids NEVER arriving, the poor things sitting in traffic through the ENTIRE performance. This meant throwing kids into scenes they didn't belong in, teaching them entirely new lines and blocking in the few free minutes we had backstage, and forcing them to cover the lines of those who no one could fill in for. Then Ryan digging my car out of a foot of snow for us to spend an hour on the road either sliding all over the place or sitting trapped in traffic. Wonderful.

I am so so so proud of those kids though, they did a fantastic, completely professional job covering for their missing cast mates. They were utterly brilliant. And it was cool to see that I am able to work under that kind of stress. But Jesus God, it was a nightmare. Ryan is my hero for life for coming to see me and digging out my car after and making nums for Jordan and I when we got home.

Still, I don't think I've ever wanted Christmas Carol to be over so badly.
