I'm not gay, but . . .

Nov 11, 2008 00:30

Seriously, the next time I hear somebody preface a comment with 'I'm not gay but . . . ' I am going to . . . well, I don't know what I'm going to do, so just knock it off. If you feel you have to declare that you're not gay before saying some chick is attractive, or other such comments about the same sex, you have issues that you need to resolve. Nobody's going to think you're gay because you said someone is good looking because no one fucking cares. And if they do, why do you fucking care? If some buttmunch decides to determine your sexuality on the basis of a single comment (having clearly made the mistake of thinking it's his/her business in the first place), then let them. What, so someone might think you are gay? Oh noes! There's an implicit notion in all of this that being gay=bad. No one says 'I'm not smart, but . . . ' or 'I don't bat for the attractive team, but . . .'. But god forbid someone might think you are gay because . . . because what? What exactly do you fear is going to happen? All teh gays will jump out and maul you? Homophobes won't like you anymore? What is it? What fear am I missing?

This is normally something I just roll my eyes at and move on, but I seem to have heard this a lot in the past few weeks, and it's beginning to grate. Is there an epidemic going on? I'm going to assume henceforth that intelligence makes one immune to this epidemic, so be warned: saying 'I'm not gay but . . . '=you're a dumbass.

(This post is reason number 204765 why all definitions of sexuality need to be eradicated from society. Sooner the better.)

Addendum: Internet trolling led me to this article which says what I wanted to say far better than I ever could, so skip my whole mess and just read this: http://homophobia.suite101.com/article.cfm/im_not_gay_but

I also found this charming comment: 'I'm not gay but I live close to San Francisco'. Oh the places I could go with that one!

Addendum to the addendum: It's usually women that saying it, but I've heard it used by both sexes when discussing gay rights. 'I'm not gay, but I think gay marriage should be legal', implying that if the speaker was actually homosexual, their opinion would be invalidated.

While I'm at it, those 'straight for gay rights' groups really shit me too. Just be for gay rights, what does you own personal sexuality have anything to do with it?
