Sooo, Katie brought to my attention that it was the 23rd today
it happened
one year ago today...
Macca hit Milwaukee....
so, in honor of the holiday....here's my blog from October the 23rd, 2005
I say gorgeous alot...
and he's single now...hmmm
My life is complete
I have seen James Paul McCartney live in Milwaukee at the Bradly Center
I don't even know what to say...I'm speechless...in shock...I...
okay, deep breath
Let's start at the beginning....after waiting a half an hour in line to get a T-shirt, I walked into the stadium looking at my watch, thinking hey! just on time...7:30...yeah...well that didn't happen. I was getting antsy, and finally, at 8 o'clock a guy walked on to the stage....and started doing some funky mixes of Paul's stuff...but WHERE'S PAUL? did he fall down another hole? (heard that story? I'll go over it in a minute...)
SOO...8:15...i'm gazing hypnotically at two giant disco balls mounted to the ceiling (these are the biggest balls i've ever seen...seriously, they were huge!) but anyways....yeah...what was I saying?
aha, the funny mixy guy finally leaves...and ok, here we go!
they showed a little video montage of Paul's life...yay!
and then
Roll up! The curtains opened, and Paul and the gang launch right into Magical Mystery Tour! I was in shock, this was it, i was in the same room as Paul McCartney! I was at a PAUL MCCARTNEY CONCERT! There was a real live BEATLE down there on the stage!!
He played for almost three hours, it was fantastic. From rocking numbers like Helter Skelter to solo guitar ballads like Yesterday. It was just incredible. The man has so much musical range. During Blackbird I called up Kristi so she could get a listen...his voice was gorgeous. And then he sang my favorite song from his new album, Jenny Wren. It's a beautiful number, lovely high notes, and a duduk solo! ooh, and I just read it's gonna be his next single off of Chaos and Creation, so that's exciting. But yeah, he played gorgeously, sang gorgeously, his voice cracked a bit on one of the high notes, but it made it that much more imperfect and lovely...i really sound like a freak here don't i? it was just so awesome...i'm still in shock.
oh yes, the hole story...
so his lovely grand piano rises up through the stage, so it's not in the way when he's on the guitar...but before it comes up, this big hole opens up in the middle of the stage. At one of the first shows of the tour, Paul was yacking to the audience...forgot about the hole...and backed right into it, falling on top of the piano. He wasn't hurt badly and was able to finish the show, and last night, while hugging his mic stand so as not to back into that hole again, he made light of it, he was real cute and seems to have a really cool personality...but i already knew that
so anyway,
and he played Maybe I'm Amazed, I loove that song, but halfway thru i started laughing cuz i remembered the simpsons ep he was in when he said "if you turn maybe i'm amazed backwards you get a recipe for a really ripping lentil soup!" haha...good times
Then he played The Long and Winding Road and I got teary...his voice was so gorgeous and that song...aah...
he played so much from such different points in his career...lots of new stuff...nothing from Driving Rain tho, I was surprised...but he played in Spite of all the Danger from waaay back when...a really good mix of his career...tho there were a few that I was surprised that he didn't do...like All My Loving, and My Love....and anything else with 'my' and 'love' in it
One of my favorites was "I Will"...just him and a guitar...and Blackbird and Eleanor Rigby done the same way...
Good Day Sunshine!! I didn't expect him to play that one, that's one of my favorite Beatles songs...okay, i'm gonna hafta pull out my Revolver LP tonight...anyway, he played Good Day Sunshine with this cool anecdote about the Discovery and how NASA woke up the Astronauts to tell them they were finally able to land with that song. It was really neat...
Helter Skelter!! aah, that was awesome...and it was driving Brian (guitar) up the wall...haha...literally...
Live and Let Die!!! pyrotechnics!!! it was so cool...
I was so surprised that he played "I've Got a Feeling", it's one of my favorites off of the Let It Be album...great song...
aaah...Yesterday...and Let It Be...I don't even know where to start with those...what do you say about songs like that....he played them beautifully of course...
Hey Jude was surreal...I look around, and thousands of people, singing "Na na na na na na na," lighters hoisted high...and...it's just amazing...I was one of those people!! That's PAUL MCCARTNEY down there on that stage!! I...I...ahhhh
They finished it off with a comination of the Sgt. Pepper reprise and The End from Abbey Road...
The lights and video were incredible. His band...I had heard it said they were the best band he's had with them since The Beatles themselves...I was a bit skeptical, but I now realize that that is completely accurate...Abe, his drummer, is awesome, I can tell he has amazing talent and I know nothing about the drums. His keyboard player, Paul Wickens, is also fantastic and multitalented. He played some of the horn parts and stuff on the synthesizer...And he can play the accordian! haha...mine is gathering dust...anyone willing to teach me? annyway... Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray are both AMAZING guitarists, they gave new life to guitar solos originally played by the likes of George Harrison... and Brian would hop on bass if Paul was playing guitar...so yeah...I don't know about him, but it would have intimidated the hell out of me to be playing Macca bass lines while STANDING NEXT TO THE MAN! ..anyway, my point was, the band was incredible, and Brian's a cutie Yeah, I know what you're all thinking..."yeah, but she thinks 63 year old Paul is hot..." and he IS. haha...too bad he's married...Heather you stole my man...
so...you guys tell me....did Kim have a good time at the Paul McCartney concert?
I think it's pretty obvious...
katie,
