My insulin regimen has begun. I returned home from my vacation and started the next day. Unfortunately, on the last two days of vacation, I was sleep-deprived and driving at odd hours. I forgot my medication for two days. Taking my blood sugar on the second morning home showed 17.7 (320 US measures)! My insulin is basal only. If I can regulate my blood sugars properly, I will not have to add bolus insulin. Tonight I broke the 3-day barrier of having a blood sugar just over 11 (200) and it's currently 9.7 (175), so I think I'm doing okay. Losing weight and exercising more will help and I need to make those changes soon. Those two things are harder than taking the insulin and blood sugars.
There's a certain mental block for me on this. You'd think I'd have learned from all of you how important these things are for everyone, not specifically for diabetics. However, it seems I have the knowledge but applying it is foreign. Still, here I go.
Next week I meet with a dietician, although I still have my charts and grids, even my original calorie limit and portion counts from ages ago when trying to help the diabetic camp teens and children for four years just after high school. I've restocked my pantry with better foods, donated the stuff I need to avoid, and pulled out the diabetic cookbooks I have. I have a plan to go walking that is adjustable by weather.
It is all a big change. I don't deal well with large changes all at once (and 2011 and 2012 have had their share already...) but I have to do this.
