So I went for a 2nd opinion on my thigh numbness, burning, stinging, stabbing pain that I have had for close to 3 years. I've had 3 epidural injections in my L4 nerve root as well. Well I went to OHSU, the fab teaching hospital here in Portland. Saw Dr XXXX, he sure looks like family and a bear as well, gaydar went crazy. Well he poked a prodded and finally he had me get on my side, he then got up on the side of the table and man the thoughts that went through my head! He compressed my pelvis and BINGO the pain went away! So I have a new diagnosis Meralgia paresthetica! Gawd it was the hottest Doctor appointment EVAH!
Meralgia paresthetica is a condition characterized by tingling, numbness and burning pain in the outer part of your thigh. The condition is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which supplies sensation to your upper leg.
We discussed neurosurgical treatments and came to the opinion that this is not the best option. My best option is.......
Bariatric Surgery, yep the cause of the pain is my weight pushing on the pelvis and the tendon and then the nerve. My BMI is 41 and this is morbid obesity. I cannot stand for more than 30 minutes or walk that amount of time either without sitting down for a few minutes, and my thigh is always numb. I called OHSU to set a consultation for possible surgery, but I'm scared by the thought of it. I know several bears have had lap-band, and hopefully I can get some good advice on the surgery.
