Test Your Might

oneshot⟶pg; The boys are given a little vacation time on the job in the US. Onew's discovered an amazing new/old game, Jonghyun and Taemin are enjoying things from the sidelines, Minho is as competitive as ever and Key is not enjoying being challenged.

Note: There are some >>in-text links<< to help you get an idea of what songs/game characters I'm referencing

10:00am; Los Angeles, CA.

Seven figures made their way out of the local mall’s Japanese vegan restaurant, five of them intent on making the most of this rare adventure and two of them really wanting to back to their hotel or, even better, on a plane back to their homes.

Those five boys, who so happened to belong to Korea’s up and (fast) coming boy band, SHINee, along with their managers were visiting the world-famed city to learn dance steps for their comeback song from their choreographer. However, since she was out of the country for an emergency something, they wouldn’t be able to meet with her until tomorrow. So instead of wasting a round-trip to Korea and back, they decided to wander the city (they could’ve easily caught up on much needed rest at their hotel but one particular maknae insisted otherwise) .

They wanted to remain as inconspicuous as possible so they shied away from the city's Korea-town as much as possible, deciding to go to another friendly yet slightly obscured Asian neighborhood in the next town over: Little Tokyo.

After having had their fill of a gourmet restaurant’s healthiest bento box, ventured the almost-empty mall. Kibum spent most his time in the boutiques; Onew, Taemin, and Jonghyun belted to their hearts content at the hole-in-the-wall karaoke spot; and Minho...Minho made his way into an arcade. He eyes gleamed as he dragged the rest of the members to the dark and neon colored room.

It was small, not as many games as back home but it was cute and most importantly, empty. Minho immediately ran over to racing games with Jonghyun. Onew curiously walked over to the taiko drum set, not at all understanding the Japanese menu but having fun selecting random options, excited at the mystery result of whatever he chose. Taemin went over to the para-para with Kibum and it couldn’t have been anymore perfect than that.

That is, until Onew discovered an ultimately epic game (after completely loosing patience with the high pitched menu character). Mortal Kombat, it was called. The title in itself was alluring and something about the vibrantly dressed characters and dark themed music just made the whole experience so...addicting. Onew cackled out loud when the game would make ominous remarks like “Finish Him!” or “Fatality”.

“Plawless Piktori. Ah, I love this!” Onew’s accent imitated the voice-over with equally deep-voiced seriousness, too excited of how amazingly exaggerated this game was.

Jonghyun had wandered over sullen and bummed, quitting the racing game after having been beaten by Minho. He, too, was soon attracted to Onew’s new-found treasure. He sat down and put some coins as second player. Not even half a round had passed and he was doubling over with laughter with the high-pitched ninja squeals and over-the-top blood loss.

“Hyung, you’re not supposed to be slamming the buttons like that. See, here’s a list of combos.” Minho commented from behind, pulling up a stool to join in and showing the eldest how to better play, but, really, he just wanted to have his own turn.

Then, as if on cue for their boss battle, loud music the likes of which resembled Japanese Anime characters going wild on sugared...sugar and outdated club music started playing: Kibum had discovered the Dance Dance Revolution system.

Taemin was jumping with excitement on the colorfully arrowed metal platform while Kibum put in tokens for the both of them, when he stopped suddenly.

“Hyung, have you ever played this? Do you even know how it works? I don’t know if it’ll we’ll get it...” His voice expressed a concerned curiousity.

“Please, Taemin, that’s like saying Jungmo-hyung wouldn’t be able to play Guitar Hero. It’s a natural talent thing, of course we’ll be able to do this, it’ll come to me, easy.”

And sure enough, it didn’t take long for Kibum to get the gist of the game. The arrows were easy enough to follow, and he learned how to jump for simultaneous arrows fairly quick. It wasn’t even his third round and he was already on the difficult level. The youngest caught up on par also making it to the hardest level and soon they were dancing so in sync and stepped on the arrow pads like twins. They’d make their choreographer proud with how they flowed so perfectly together as one.

It was in the middle of an >>India-Bollywood inspired song<< when the other members had gathered around the two (after having battled and failed to beat the boss from earlier), amazed at the combos and perfect scores. The fluid youths were both neck and neck, receiving just about the same scores but in the end Taemin had won hugging his hoobae in sweaty delight.

Key didn’t mind losing because the song was so exotic and he was honestly having a really good time (that and he did previously win all those other rounds), that is, not until one husky voice piped up his interest.

“Hey that looks like fun, I wanna try. Kibum-ah, let’s play.” He grinned with a challenging spark.

“I’m tired, play with Taemin.” Kibum replied uninterested; he wanted to keep at least one game as just that, a game and not an all out olympic competition. But Minho only played with the best only to see himself be victorious, and as much as he loved the talented maknae, he wanted to make this one worthwhile.

“It’ll be fun, I could use some rhythm practice. Just one round?” Minho’s voice went just a bit higher.

“No! YOU won’t make it fun, you’ll turn it into a death match. Play with Taemin, he’s just as good. I’m going back to the para-para.”

He was already stepping off the platform when a strong grip encircled his wrist. He looked back and stupid Big Bird was giving him that fiery look he was all too familiar with.

“Fine!" Kibum huffed. "Whatever but you still have to learn from Taemin, I don’t feel like teaching you.”

And so the younger boy taught the other. Minho, of course, also learned quickly. Though he stomped a lot harder than the two others did at first, and Key laughed with a little too much mirth when he pushed the taller boy while he was air-born for one of the simultaneous-jump steps, his concentration completely thrown off and his eyes bulging with utter shock.

“Gosh, you ARE an alien-frog freak,” Kibum teased, still recovering from his laughing fit.
“That was pretty funny, hyung,” Taemin smiled toothily holding on to a doubled-over Key.

“Ok. I’m ready.” Minho said after a few more songs and was a little out of breath with his shirt humid from the sweat on his back, but his determined face betrayed any sign of tiring.

“Let’s do this. Don’t cry when you fail like the frustrated duck you are.” Kibum smirked, knowing that Minho was on HIS turf of expertise.

They battled it out ferociously, and it was at the beginning of >> the last song<< when the other two members came running: the song had a very very uncanny semblance to the game they were just playing.

Onew fell to his knees, reaching his hands up to the ceiling and yelling with his eyes closed: “MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!”
“Exshellent” came a low mutter from Jonghyun who was staring cynically at the two dancing, his mind far off and away as he imagined >>Minho with horns<< and the body of a centaur and Kibum with a >>tight green skimpy jumper and mask.<<
j

They were both brought back to their senses when a yelp of surprise and celebration came from out the youngest: Kibum had won.

And, oh, how he milked his winning.

He did this little victory dance, shaking his butt, flapping his arms like a duck, and slapped his behind a couple of times for good measure. It wasn’t everyday anyone from the group could win out  the ace of the band, even if it was something he just learned. Kibum started to feel a bit of remorse knowing it was Minho’s first time, but whatever ounce of that feeling he had developed was burnt away by a searing pain on his butt cheeks: Minho had come out from nowhere and took out his revenge by swiftly smacking Key on his ass and smacking it hard.

“AAAIIIIISSHHHH. You... you bitch!” Kibum jaw hung low with his eyes squeezed shut as he cradled his injured bum.

“Yeah, yeah don’t get too comfortable princess, we still got two more rounds. Best two outta three. C’mon, unless your name is Lee Sang In.” Minho jeered partly playfully but mostly seriously, already putting tokens in and picking out a song. He made a mental note to apologize to his mentioned senior when he was to go back to the sports show.

“YOU’RE ON, HO!”

They were in the middle of their 10th song on their 6th round when the other members were already getting  bored and tired on their way out the arcade, leaving a yawning maknae to leave the news to the competitive twins.

“...so we’re gonna be leaving. Are you guys gonna take long?”
Silence from the older two, too focused..
“Well, manager-hyung said to hurry up because we have to be at the hotel. Hyung.”
More intense silence.
“HYUNG.”
“Ok Tae, we’ll call you guys when we’re done and SHIT, NO, COMBO BREAKER. NOOO.”
“HAH HAH HAH  you can’t even multi-task without missing an arrow. So much for Dancing Queen. You’re mine, diva.”

“Shut up & dance! It isn’t over! Best 9 out of 10!”

Taemin pouted and frowned with annoyance, slumping his shoulders and staggering after his other band mates.

It was twenty songs later when he noticed that his legs felt like jello and that he might be waking up with thunder thighs that Key collapsed to the steel platform mid-song, sweaty and panting.

“YES. YES. Who has two left feet now!  WOO.” Minho punched his fist up in the air, nodding with his eyes closed in forced victory.
Kibum just lay sprawled on the arcade floor, heaving when his blurred vision suddenly cleared to a cheesily smiling Minho. His inhaled deeply through his flaring nose shaking his head.

“Never. Again.”
“Aw haha don’t be a sore loser!”
“Whatever let’s just get out of here,” Kibum bitterly mumbled, rejecting Minho’s outreached hand as he pulled himself up, both of them making their way out the arcade to find the rest of the group.

***
Minho was waiting patiently outside the men’s bathroom, arms crossed and leg pulled up against the wall when Kibum finally came out after some 30 minutes.

“Jeeze, what were you doing, reapplying another two layers of make-up?” He pushed himself off the wall, walking away.

“Oh shut up. I shouldn’t have kept asking for water refills...Whatever let’s go.” The shorter commenced walking ahead down the hallway when he heard the steps behind him halt.

“What? Don’t tell me you have to go no-” He trailed off when he noticed Minho staring distantly at something, and it was only when he walked to him that he noticed what they both missed earlier: a long dark hallway with concrete bricks for walls and lights low and flickering, almost like it came out of-

“A horror movie. Kibum, this is looks JUST like something you’d see in a horror movie! Right?”

“What the-... how the heck did we miss this when we walked in?”

“No clue but let’s go, it’s begging for us to walk through it.”

“What the hell Minho! What if there’s like some sort of death chamber? No, I’m not going..”

“C’mon you love horror movies right? This is as close to being in one as we’ll ever get. Besides you have nothing to fear, you’re with me remember?” Minho winked cockily as he grabbed the others hand and speed walked into the long and dark hallway.

It was beyond eerie, and Kibum was expecting faceless nurses to come out and knife them but he sighed in relief when the hallway ended suddenly, with double doors as their only exit.

“Well that was anticlimactic.” Minho frowned, not at all satisfied.
“Good, l-let’s go back.” Kibum wasn’t keen on showing it, but there really was some intense fear building up inside him and he wanted to leave, pronto.
“Hey wait.” Minho said hopefully as he noticed only one of the doors was propped open. “These doors, they only open from one side. Ohhh this should be a little more interesting.”
“Minho, no I don’t think-”. Too late, Kibum was already being dragged beyond the doors and into an eerier flight of stairs with stains on the wall that looked like, like...
“Oh god now, is that blood?” Kibum whined and proceeded to covering his face with both hands.
“They’re water stains. Let’s keep going down.” And they did but not before Kibum reached out for the others hand. Minho looked back up at him, eyebrow arched. And Kibum look right back with his own brows frowning, nodding frustratedly like their holding hands was the most obvious thing to do in this situation. Minho shrugged and sighed, accepting as they made their way down the steps.

“Crap, there’s no signal here.” The older checked his phone to see his battery half dead from the roaming. “What if there IS a torture chamber somewhere? I’m too beautiful to die somewhere not in the public eye..”

“Look.” Minho ignored Key’s self-centered statement and pointed to a door with no handles that was also propped open.

“No, you look. No more going into random doors and-.” but Minho had already pushed him in. Before Minho could follow him in, however, the door closed. His eyes widened, all the lights had suddenly gone out and all he heard was Key’s ear-splitting scream.

***

Kibum pounded on the door that apparently had no knobs or anything on either end. He was beyond having enough of Minho’s antics, swearing to skin the other if they ever got out of this, and that’s what set him off even more, the if.

He kept pounding when he heard screeching noises from the other end that made him jump back.
“Ohgodohgodohgod I’m going to die I’m going to fucking-” The lights suddenly flickered back on again and the door suddenly oppened.

“Key...” Minho breathed out the words, face sullen; he had managed to open the door all on his own with the Swiss Army knife his brother have him.

“What took you so long, you jerk!” Kibum shoved the other away really hard, hugging himself as he started to pace.

“Sorry, I just. I thought that...That was...scary.” Minho closed his eyes, breathing slowly with regret.

“I guess you got what you wanted then right? Even if it was your fault, Mr. ‘let’s go down the horror movie status hallway’.” Key would’ve sounded sardonic and Minho would’ve tried to laugh in response had it not been for the other’s wavering voice that Minho barely caught. And it was only when he walked closer to the other boy when he noticed: Kibum was crying.

“Oh. Well, sh-shut up? Uhm here, and don’t even think about letting go.” Minho linked their hands again this time, making sure to stay on the flight of stairs.

Some moments passed when Minho stopped again.
“Kibum?”
“Hmm?” Minho turned around to face Kibum, a wavering and forced smile on his face as he waited for the taller boy to continue.

The lights were still flickering hauntingly against the dark flight of stairs and if it was any darker and they weren’t holding hands, Kibum would be jumping through the ceiling at the soft tingle he felt on his cheek.  Goosebumps and a shiver travelled through his body starting from that spot Minho kissed him on, and he suddenly felt cold and naked when the shaggy haired teen pulled back running his hand through his medium length shaggy hair.

Kibum stood shocked, so many emotions running through him: fear, anger, relief, and...a tinge of palpitation somewhere near his chest.

“ I just, I wanted to make up for earli-” Minho was cut off with a pair of lips enveloping his own lower own.

Kibum grazed a shiver lowering lip to the other’s upper labium and sucked lightly. Minho stood frozen but eventually moved along with Key as best he could, his free hand reaching up so the tips of his fingers could caress the other’s cheek and jaw while his thumb pushed his chin down to open his lips. He wanted to deepen their kiss but wasn’t sure how and didn’t want to mess this up and it was all so sudden and...he pulled back, leaving a closed eyes Kibum with slightly parted lips, still in the moment. Minho swallowed, moving forward to peck the tip of Key’s mouth, as if trying to get him back to reality.

“Wow.” his eyes still closed as a tear that tasted of fear and surprise slipped out from underneath one of them.
“Yeah,” squeezing his hand. “Let’s uh, let’s go?”

“Yeah” he whispered, taking in a deep sigh as he wiped the tear away.

They both walked down till the bottom of the stairs and were met with two pairs of double doors. They both smiled at each other, exchanging nods signifying a. “Ok, go”. Moonlight welcomed the two as they opened the door to meet with their other concerned band members.

***

“Guys, GUYS, we should TOTALLY dress up as Mortal Kombat characters and do battle with each other!” Onew was walking backwards facing the other four, his face suddenly revived with excitement after explaining to them the adventure he had with the game.

The group’s concern had faded away now that they were all in one peace and, more importantly, reunited as a group.

“I want to be Motaro!” Taemin hopped happily.

“I’ll be Raiden,” Onew added in with serious contemplation, “Thunder god pretty much owns all else.”

“Kibummie, you’d be perfect as Sindel. You know, finally put your loud voice to good use.” The group laughed harmoniously at Jonghyun’s remark, except for Kibum who huffed for all the wrong reasons, completely missing Jonghyun’s insult.

“Hell no! I don’t want to be that old hag! I’ll be Kitana, she’s known for being a sneaky tramp for being the Emperor’s toy then completely betraying him to be on the good side. Besides, she’s the hottest one in the game so it only makes sense that I be her.”

“Whatever I’ll be subzero, freeze ya’ll suckas up! We can match, Key, we’ll both be blue.” Jonghyun said happily, giving Key a lopsided grin.

“I’ll be Liu Kang.” Minho looked at Kibum knowingly, making him smile and look down shaking his head shyly.

“Yeah I’ll fan your flames, charisma.” he muttered so only the two of them could hear. Their fingers linked at the tips as they pressed closer to walk side-by-side, leaving a whining Jonghyun to catch up.

“What?! Wait no I should be Liu! I’d look better shirtless because I’ve got bigger guns, and I’ve always wanted to know what I look like with long hair...”

THE END
