The two men held their cold, hard stares for a long time. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them moved. Though to be fair to one, he was bound to a pole, held captive by the traitors he wanted to see defeated. The other sat on the other side of the room, carefully studying the inspector as though he was considering the words to say.
Finally, Enjolras spoke. “We do not have to be enemies.”
Javert stayed silent, unblinking.
“Surely you must want what is best for the people of France as well. You could help us fight the oppression.”
Javert’s mouth twitched.
“It does not have to be this way.”
“You would trust me?” challenged Javert with a smirk. “You would trust me, the man came here as a spy and whose goals are clearly opposite of yours? Why do you bother trying to convert me? You must know that I will not bend, just as I know you will not.”
Enjolras stood, his expression unchanging. “Is that why you do not try to convince me to surrender?”
“It does not matter. You have committed an act of treason. Even if you surrendered, your fate will be the same. But I see you. You will not surrender, even if all this is futile. I have no interest in wasting my breath any further.”
Enjolras approached Javert, only a few inches between their faces. “You see me.”
“Loud and clear. Which begs the question: why do you try to talk me onto your side?”
“Because I like to think I see you, too.”
Javert snorted. “You do not.”
“Enjolras!” a student called from outside the Corinthe. “You’re needed.”
Enjolras regarded the boy with a nod and stepped away from Javert. “You will see. The people will rise. A republic will dawn upon France. The true traitors are the king and all who help perpetuate this government. You do not need to be one of them.”
Before Javert could retort, Enjolras was out of the tavern.
The two would never speak again.
