A dull growl sounded through his ears, as though he were listening to it while underwater. All around him was nothingness, a black void that swallowed everything whole.
In his hands, the pages of a journal flipped wildly because of a sudden gust of air--several pressed flowers flew from between them, scattering into the darkness. A single black feather--he almost didn't notice it--flew away, melding into the black. The journal dropped; he bent down to the floor, hands groping for it, for the flowers, the feather.
Nothing.
And suddenly, his hand wasn't a hand anymore. It was a bear's claw, covered in fresh blood, gripping an eye patch. An eye patch?
His left eye--it had been shut the whole time, and he hadn't even noticed--finally opened. The underwater feeling was gone; the feral growl ripping through the air also tore out from his own vocal cords.
A soft voice asked him, "Is there something... that you just want to forget?"
