Inspired by
David Wolfson,
Jason Loffredo and others, I’ll play this game now...
Here is a list of instruments, each of which I’ve played at *least* once live in front of an audience - except that I’m lying about one of them. Take a guess. Ha!
Flute
Piccolo
Clarinet
French horn
Trumpet
Euphonium
Sousaphone
Glockenspiel
Handbells
Triangle
Guitar
Bass Ukulele
Accordion
Celesta
Harpsichord
Piano
Violin
Cello
Upright bass
[Edit:
Mary Luckhardt,
Melody Baird,
John Rhyne, and
Jeff Bowles are correct: it’s the clarinet! I did learn as a kid how to play it, but I’m pretty sure I never performed on it in public - and I switched away from my Music Ed major in college before I got around to taking the Woodwind Workshop course. (Trust me, you’re lucky I didn’t pursue reed instruments any further.)
Other instruments I’ve performed on but didn’t list:
Timpani and chimes (
Andrew Berman and
Roger Burnett were responsible)
Tenor sax (only once, at a church function-
Denis Couch might remember)
Trombone (summer town band and HS “stage band”- remember,
Scott Robinson?)
Autoharp (best to leave that there)
Instruments I’ve gotten dangerously close to once or twice:
Oboe
Bassoon
E-flat contra-alto clarinet
Valve trombone
Harp
Viola
Musical saw
Melodica
Theremin
Bagpipes
I’m sure there are others lost in murky memory.
If I were to have the opportunity, teachers, and unlimited time, I’d want to learn the bassoon and/or the harp.]
