Well, almost done my Christmas shopping. Aside from a few gift cards and minor things, the substantive part of the shopping - the go out to stores and look around and try to figure out what to buy sort - is complete for 2008.
Having no idea what to get my 14 year old nephew, I asked my mother to find out some suggestions for him. It turns out that a set of books called the Twilight series is very popular with the kids right now and he wants the whole collection. I could only find two of the series at the bookstore - the cashier told me that some books in the series are sold out across North America- and from what I've heard these are kind of like this years Harry Potters.
I was fairly bookish as a kid and always liked receiving books as presents, but I really felt like more an exception than a rule. I can't recall any particular series of books being all the rage for gifts in the 80's when I was young. It was Cabbage Patch Kids and Pac-Man and other toys that all my classmates wanted.
It's funny that among my nephew's generation specific series of printed, paper books are what all the kids want. At least it encourages reading.
