real estate

Back during the Christmas break, I was driving around the countryside near my old home. I usually make an effort to visit out there when I'm in peterborough and I love how the area looks to much the same. Driving or walking around there, seeing how familiar everything is, I feel like I did when I lived there, except for being more established and confident.

During this last trip I noticed the large farm right across the road from my house was for sale. This in itself isn't surprising since I know the farmer was getting on and all of his kids are working and not interested in the farm. But looking up the real estate listing I was sad to notice that the property is being annexed by the city. If the pattern from the past follows, then most likely it's being advertised with the intent of re-zoning it into commercial or residential area. Certainly the price tag is suggestive of that.

I know it's irrational, and maybe a bit cornball, but I'm really sad to think that someday, right across from the quiet little spot where I grew up, there could be a Wal-Mart or a sub-division replacing the fields and the old farm house.

Here's an air-photo of the spot. The A is the property...the arrow points to my place.
