It's on the radio and in the malls and stores all over this year, again, and it's impossible for me to understand the appeal of it. We have a horrible christmas song that they only play in DC. I thankfully only hear it maybe once a year but the minute I do hear it come on I run from the room. It's called "Christmas Time in Washing-Town" or at least that's how the old warbly guy who sings it pronounces it. Just hearing the schmaltz oozing out of the radio makes me want to stab something.

I like to add to the story using my warped imagination, in that the time and effort spent on the gift only makes things worse. I imagine the boy's mother has always been one to speak before thinking, and when she sees the shoes, her dying words are, "They're so... tacky..."
