When I was in grade 2, my "Auntie" Rosalind (actually a friend of my parents)gave me an illustrated copy of Dickens' A Christmas Carol as a gift for, appropriately enough, Christmas. It collected dust until I was about 13. Since then I have read it to myself every Christmas Eve.
I am still fascinated the illustrations in the book, done by Arthur Rackham. His paintings are somehow vague and dreamlike and yet very detailed at the same time. I'd think that many of the modern depictions of Scrooge and the other characters in modern media must have been influenced by these prints.
