the hamster in the bubble

I bought Hammy a bigger hamster ball tonight. It's about the size of a volleyball, clear plastic with air vents, and opens on one end.

We had bought him a small one, about the size of a grapefruit, on suday but he didn't seem to like it...the poor dear would sit in it and cower, and i wondered if maybe he was too big for that one.

The bigger one worked. From the moment I put him in it, he just started speeding right along the floor, all over my place from the kitchen to the bedroom, under the couch, into the bathroom, and back. It didn't take him long at all to figure out how to negotiate corners or steer around objects.

I wonder how in heck a rodent could take so easily to a mode of transportation which is completely unnatural. After all, where in the wild would a hamster be running around in a clear speherical object?
