As one of those lucky 700,000+ people in Western Washington whose power was knocked out by the storms of the last few days, I'm even more fortunate to have my power back as of 7:32 this morning. My parents are still without power, which is sad because my mother spent her birthday yesterday in a cold house near a wood burning stove.
In fact, yesterday was sad altogether, as I attended a memorial service for the mother of one of my coworkers. I actually had met his mother at a birthday party that he had held for his youngest son. His mother had died Tuesday at the age of 77, of stage 4 lung cancer, from second hand smoke, caused by her husband of 48 years who had been a lifelong smoker, who himself died 7 years earlier.
