Yesterday was the day of strange customer exchanges at work. Maybe it was the fact that inventory was the night before and all the managers were too tired to care. Or perhaps it was due to the fact I had worked Saturday as well, and I had not worked a back to back shift at Paper Source in sometime. Regardless I wrote down some of the peculiar conversations I had.
Little boy from Georgia (age 8) in DC for a karate torment: Lady you are so blessed
Me: Thank you. And why do you say that?
LB: Because you get to live in Washington DC while the best president ever is in office!
Grandmother of little boy: OH yes, this sure is an exiting time for all those that follow the word of God, politics is finally moral again.
Me: (with obvious sarcasm) Oh yes, no unclean scandals like that of the Clinton administration have rocked any DC republicans recently.
Grandmother: It is because G-o-d is with the GOP. (And they leave)
To set the scene I am helping a woman make first birthday invitations for her ADORABLE son that is with her. I usually take it upon myself to ‘chat with every child’ this one I was telling him that I liked his hat and he had a cute smile.
Mother: you are so matter of fact with children, it is refreshing.
Me: thanks
Mother: so how many did you leave at home with your husband? You probably do this job just to get out, I know I would if I had more than one.
Me (clearly startled): I am still in school
Mother: well you and your boyfriend will have children soon after graduation I can feel it!
Really, these conversations were not too out of the ordinary. I just think the sincerity that the other people spoke to me about these issues was odd. What would they really think if they knew my personal belifs/lifestyle? The diversity in people’s experiences/opinions always takes me by surprise. Last but not least
Cool woman: …AND THAN THE ABBA COVER BAND ARRIVED
Me: Oh, that is always the start of a good night!
CW: You don’t have to tell me that!
Me: Were they a drag act?
CW: NO, that was the weirdest part they were all biological. I am so used to drag ABBA it was almost a kitschy commodity.
