Where did the decade go?
OK, so I freaked out when I got my issue of Rolling Stone and it had "Best of the 00's" on the cover. I had not even realized that this coming New Year's was the end of a decade - the "naughts"! Geez! Is it because I was fooled by the still-newness of the first two digits of this century? When I realize we've been through a decade already I think "where the hell did ten years go?" The Y2K scare doesn't seem THAT long ago. Oy!
Decade highlights: trips to London with Joe '00, Bear Bust '01 and '03, Italy '02 with our friend Rhonda, the surprise 40th birthday party Joe threw for me in '02, San Fran and area - and meeting Jack and Steve '03, Boston Gay Men's Chorus trip to Montreal '04, the chorus tour of Berlin, Wraszawa, Poland and Prague '05, Bear Invasion '05, Bear Week '04, '05, '06, '07, '08, '09, Joe's & my mediterranean cruise in '06 (Venice, Athens, Turkey, Crete, Corfu), our wedding in '07 and honeymoon in Vieques, Puerto Rico, and trips to Atlanta, Las Vegas and Sedona in '08. The election of Obama in '08. Getting my mom's book done in '09. Thanksgiving '09 with my family. Visits to NYC, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, Florida, Seattle, Chicago, and Portland to visit with friends and family. Trips to all of the New England and New York states for the same. Performing in various shows ("Once On This Island", "Urinetown", "Evita", "Best Little Whorehouse In Texas", "On the 20th Century", "The Wiz") and cabarets and winning an audience favorite award in the New England Fringe Festival. But time spent with my bear and with close friends and family and cats are always the best memories.
Concerts in the '00s: Saw Madonna, Cher, Barbra, Bette, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones at Fenway, Pet Shop Boys, Dandy Warhols, Lady Gaga, Tom Jones, Weezer. More I'm sure that I can't think of right now.
Saw on Broadway: "Wicked", "Cabaret", "Avenue Q", "Wonderful Town", "Boy From Oz", "Boeing Boeing", "42nd Street", among others and elsewhere "Hairspray", "Mamma Mia", "The Beatles LOVE", and "Movin' Out".
Fave artists of the '00s: Annie Lennox, Wilco, Killers, White Stripes, Moby, Madonna, Dandy Warhols, Goldfrapp, The Shins, etc.
Decade downers: hanging chads, George Bush, 9/11, Iraq war, George Bush, global warming, deaths of my father, my best friend Rhonda, and my personal hero George Harrison, and of course the deaths of my cats Gus, Napoleon, and Pretinha. Also watching my retirement savings cut in half and then some. And lastly, George Bush. EIGHT YEARS of George Bush. Ugh.
Not sure what the "10's" will bring, but I am optimistic and looking forward. Just wish this decade doesn't fly by like the last one.
