Drummer interview!!!!

1. How long have you been a drummer?

Probably almost 10 years or so. I should probably be better by now, haha.

2. When/why did you decide to be a drummer?

I played guitar and wanted to start a band, but no one in Maine knew how to play drums, so I decided to figure it out.

3. What kind of set do you play?

I have a Pork Pie kit back east. I live in Los Angeles now and didn't bring it out with me. The only shows I play these days usually have a back line so I just bring my cymbals, snare, and pedal. I do have a Roland TD-4 electric kit at my place just to goof around on without annoying the neighbors.

4. What album(s) did you learn to drum to? If not an album, with whom? Or did you just bang it out?

Nirvana - Nevermind
Green Day - Dookie

5. When you started out, did you buy so many accessories?

I bought a splash cymbal once. That was dumb, haha. I try to keep it pretty simple with my set up- two crash, ride, hi hat, snare, rack, floor, and kick. I wouldn't know what to do with anything more than that.

6. Single or double?

Pedal? I just use a single pedal. I don't see the point in a double unless you're in a metal band or something.

7. Stick size/type?

I think 2B or 5B. I just buy bricks of whatever is cheapest. I break sticks like crazy no matter what brand I use.

8. Nylon tips, or wood?

Wood. I think the nylon tips tend to fly off after awhile and I feel like they damage cymbals faster. Not sure if that's true or if I'm just an idiot.

9. What brand of heads do you prefer?

I like Evans coated. I don't like to see inside the drums.

10. What is your favorite cymbal ever?

I have this 20" Paiste crash/ride thing that sounds pretty rad.

11. What are your thoughts on china cymbals?

They sound like trash can lids.

12. How about splashes?

I just don't know when I would ever use one...unless I was in Tool or something.

13. Where do you get your gear from?

Drum Shop on St. John Street in Portland, ME. On the road I just go to Guitar Center. I make sure to shower right after.

14. How do you feel about the statement “any drummer with more than a four piece set is an asshole?”

Hey whatever works... as long as their toms aren't at weird angles. Nothing screams terrible local band more than toms at a 90 degree angle.

15. I know that you were in The Leftovers, what are you up to now. Would you mind listing out a band bio for us?

I don't play much anymore. I moved to Los Angeles 4 years ago. I am a sound editor for cartoons at Fox. It's pretty rad. Sometimes I'll play some shows with The Queers, who I used to tour with a lot. I also have a new band with Andrew and Matt from the Leftovers, and Eric from the Jetty Boys called Borderlines. It's a ton of fun, and I think we have some cool songs. It's just hard to get together because we live all over the place. We have an ep out, and enough songs for a full length. We just have to get around to recording it.

16.  Where is your best performance located?

My favorite record I've done is The Leftovers "On the Move". It's at interpunk and itunes. The Borderlines ep "Magical Paths to Fortune and Power" is also on itunes and interpunk.

17. Who are your top three drummers now?

Dave from Kid Dynamite. Brandon from Teenage Bottlerocket. Josh from Broadway Calls. I like drummers who hit really hard.

18. Who were your initial top three drummers?

I don't remember...but probably Bill Stevenson, Marky Ramone, and Tre Cool or something.

19. Have you ever actually stopped a cymbal crack?

Whoa is that possible? Whenever I get a crack I just send the cymbal back and get a replacement.

20. Do you play any other instruments, or do you feel like a drummer should just concentrate on doing their drummer job well?

I can play guitar and bass and some piano. I'm probably better at guitar than drums, haha. I feel like most drummers play more instruments.

21. How do you feel about that “This drummer is at the wrong gig” video? That shit rules, right?

Haha I never knew that was the name of it. Yeah that video rules. I think that guy was on The Office once.

22. What is your signature move?

Red Sox hat-wearing.

23. What cd do you put in just because the drums are amazing?

I'm only amazed by metal drummers, and I don't really like listening to metal. There are definitely records that I listen to because they have a great drum sound. Any Teenage Bottlerocket record. Methadones - 21st Century Power Pop Riot. Broadway Calls - Good Views Bad News. Have Heart - Things We Carry. Strike Anywhere - Exit English. Lifetime S/T. Kid Dynamite - Shorter, Faster, Louder. Actually the drums on that rule.

24. What would be the most exciting fill in spot for you; the kind where you would puke from excitement before going onstage?

Probably Green Day or some shit.

25. Fill in the blank: Best word (phrase) ever to describe your drumming: Loud
Worst word (phrase) ever to describe your drumming: Quiet
Word (phrase) that you are aiming for while drumming: Fast hi hat 8th notes.

Thanks dude!!
