A day in the life of a Kindergartener....(well, just circle time from 9am to 10am)
Today in circle time we looked at the book "Sleepy Bear". First we looked at the cover for clues (What season is this? What color are the leaves? ) and discovered that it was the season Fall on the cover. Then we talked about why the Bear was sleepy. Hibernation!
Then we looked at the Calendar. Blake got to be the helper today and used the pointer. He kept dancing and I thought he might hit me with that long wooden pointer. Today is Thursday, September 30, 2004. We counted up to 30. We spelled September out loud. We pointed to every letter. Then we counted the days we've been in school (18!!!) We counted with numbers, then we counted straws up to 18! when we get to 10 we put a rubber band around them and soon we'll be up to 20 so we'll have two groups of 10. We sang the song about all of the months of the year with the chicken soup with Rice book. I know all the words now.
In January
It’s so nice
while slipping
on the sliding ice
to sip hot chicken soup
with rice.
Sipping once
sipping twice
sipping chicken soup
with rice.
Then we sang the color song while the teacher pointed to the words, she didn't help us read the words at all!!! Then we read the book "what do you do?" which is a very silly book about kids trying to act like animals. We read a lot on our own too, and I recognized a lot of words from the book on the board (like "Moneys swing, Frogs sit"). Then we were able to recognize the color words even when they were written only in black (It was a little hard, at first I thought the word gray was green but then the teacher reminded us to look at the last letter).
Then we made sentences from what we remembered about the "What do you see?" book. Our teacher had cards with different words on it and we just put the words in order ("I went walking, what do you see? I see a ___ cat looking at me") We remembered that a question mark means that we can answer something back. We also read the book "Wheels on the Bus" but we really sang it with all the hand motions to go along with it. We didn't need the teacher's help at all!! Next we read "Mary Wore Her Red Dress" but we all know that book really well now, it wasn't hard at all.
Then we were done and we went to eat snack a little early so that we could have more time at stations!!!
