How'd you do with catching a wave or three? Isn't wind surfing when you're pulled along behind a motor boat, as if you were water skiing, but you have this hang glider contraption on you that makes you fly? That would be amazing.

To hide the gray! David thinks that's the best way to pick up hot women. That commercial where they show the guy covering up his gray beard seems to think so, too.

I'm a pretty good surfer, actually. Provided that the waves are the right height. Oh, I don't know if I could do that. I'm sort of afraid of heights.

What's wrong with gray? I've got gray hair too, you know. Commercials want you to believe them, but I wouldn't if I were you. I think your hair is fine the way it is.

For as long as we've known each other, I never knew that about you and surfing. I think I'd like to give wind surfing a go - I've always wanted to fly again.

Personally, I think gray is the new hip look, but I'm just repeating what David told me.

Private to Kevin

He's been dating, David has. Belinda.

And what the hell, you're hooking up with Fatima? How come everybody's attracting pretty young things, except me?

bear_w_me December 28 2007, 07:36:42 UTC
I usually keep it to myself.

Private to Neil

Really? Good for him! Though, it might be too soon after his divorce...

...

What?! I'm not hooking up with Fatima! We're going as friends. And I'm sure pretty young things are attracted to you. It's not always easy to tell.

Wouldn't want word of that to get out. Who knows what kind of can of worms you'll open.

Private to Kevin
That's what I said, good for him. Although he's been feeling guilty. I personally think there's nothing wrong, and the man was married to my sister for God's sake. David's a real homebody - he needs a woman in his life. I'm pretty sure it's a Tale thing.

I'm not fretting about it. It's a bit funny, actually.

Of course. Friends. I've had friends like that before, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more. Before you start sputtering, I'm giving you the mickey.

Exactly. So hush hush.

Private to Neil

That's true...As long as he's happy and doesn't get hurt.

...I'm beginning to wonder if she might actually like me. We just had a fairly awkward conversation in here...

And what the hell is "giving me the mickey" supposed to mean? Speak English, Neil. This is an English-speaking journal.

So, encourage him.

Let's give them something to talk abouuuut...a little mystery to figure ouuuut. Go with the flow and see what comes of it.

You've never heard that phrase before? It means I'm pulling your leg. Joking around. You know, what I always do. Somebody tell New Zealand's Harrison and Australia's Paisley that North American English can only be written here. Especially Paisley.

Are you Bonnie Raitting me now?

Ah. Well, I don't know how well they'd take that, being from other countries and all. I don't think either of them like me much. I seem to repell Aussies and...Zealies? I refuse to call them Kiwis. That sounds so fruity.

You should hear me with a band backing me up.

She basically admitted to imagining you in the buff! What's with you bears? (heh, heh)

Kevin. Don't you remember that technically you and I are also from other countries?

Zealots?

Oh, that was a terrible pun. I know she did. I realize that. Yes.

...I just don't know how to feel about it, exactly.

I do remember that. But that's no reason to tell others how to talk, eh?

I dare you to call him a Zealot.

Let me help you - flattered? Ask her out? Take her on a date as soon as you return home?

Just watch me!

I don't know...She's such a great lady. It's just that...So much craziness is going on right now, quite literally. I'd hate to put her in the middle of the mess that is my life.

Listen to me, my Canadian friend... first of all, it's not like you've ever kept the mess that is your life a secret - anybody reading in these journals (like Fatima!) would know you have a bi-polar wife who took your toaster and abandoned your daughter, that you're trying to get full custody of the child and... was that all? In any case, even if she hasn't read all this before, anybody who's thinking about you chasing moose in the nude is going to be interested enough to find out more about you and will learn this information any way.

SECOND: who is to say this has to be some life long deep commitment thing? What's wrong with having a little female company? What's wrong having a bit of fun? Nothing, that's what. Ask her if she'd like to hang out with you and see where it goes from there. If it does become serious, then good on you. If she declines, then you know. But I don't think she's going to decline. I mean, she's already said she'd like to hang out with you on Canadian Day, whenever that is (the summer?) So, just see if she'd like to meet a little sooner than that. Like, when you get back home.

When do you get back home?

It's Canada Day, actually. July 1st.

I don't know. I just feel so insecure. But I guess it's worth a try. She's definitely a lot of fun. And she understands me. And Darlie loves her.

Okay, I will.

I'll be back home on Monday morning. I'd be crazy to miss New Year's in New York. Darlie wants to go to Time's Square, but I think watching it on tv would be warmer and less crowded. Anyway, aren't the Byrons having a party? I could maybe ask Tima to that. You going?

Good. I'm glad you see it my way.

How old is Darlie? It's too crazy in Time's Square on New Year's Eve - she'll be trampled. Television is the best option. The Bryons' party won't be child-friendly, you know that. And yes, I'm planning to go. Can't break a tradition!

She's five. That was my thought exactly. She'll probably fall asleep way before midnight anyway. Always does. Maybe I'll spend the night with her and Fatima. That might be a better date...Less crazy. I'd get a sitter, but that would make Darlie sad. She always seemed to get handed to sitters whenever Laura wanted to go out -- which was often. I don't blame her for being sick of it.

If things go well, Tima and I would have lots of time alone while Darlie sleeps...
