Memory Like A Goldfish: The View Outside Is Always New

If you've never seriously used the word "paradigm" in a sentence and find doing so objectionable, you're probably going to hate me. If you've used the word "paradigm" in a sentence while snarking someone and using a fandom-related icon, I suggest now that we marry.

My name is Dan, but I'm perfectly happy to go by Bean, as Julian "Bean" Delphiki of the Ender's Game books is essentially me in an alternate universe. (Don't go taking that statement too seriously, now.) I'm male (which means I'm currently breaking about 34 unspoken lj social rules by default as I type up this thing - but it looks good, right?), 24, white and queer, which I think about hits the main points.

I'm taking journalism, although I'm fairly sure at this point that I'll never be a journalist. I also briefly studied technical theatre, but that didn't work out either; I'm still figuring out what the hell I'm doing. I'm tentatively considering med school. I want to do something that makes a tangible difference in who and what I'm surrounded by; and by that, I don't mean that I want to bring about world peace, but I do want my existence to mark some forward progress. I'm not sure what other point there is to being alive.

Essentially, I'm very, very twenty-something right now.

I want to know everything under the sun. I love figuring out what makes people tick. I'm generally convinced that I'm right. I have a nasty temper sometimes, but I also find almost everything funny. I strongly resist anything that doesn't interest me or feels like a waste of time, which lamentably makes me an "underachiever." I'm generally quite straightforward: if I like something, I'll probably say so. If I don't, I'll probably say that, too.

I don't like manipulation or social agendas. Don't accuse me of having one.

I'm an atheist. I have ADHD, and I don't take kindly to anti-Ritalin propaganda. I'm interested in anti-oppression work and critical race theory. Generally, I lean way to the left, and most of my sociopolitical opinions would make the conservative people in my hometown shudder. Needless to say, I rant a lot.

I read widely, but I'm mostly interested in: classic sci-fi or anything that feels like it; non-fiction, particularly related to medicine or psychology; and fanfiction from nearly every fandom I've even heard of (and some I haven't). I listen to practically anything, but I have a weakness for upbeat and sappy showtunes and 80's pop. Yeah, I'm a cheeseball.

I've been on Livejournal since my senior year of high school, but I tend to disappear for stretches; I have a typing-related RSI, so I may just not be capable of typing at any given time. But I might also be feeling lazy, so feel free to nudge me.

I am currently a huge fan of House, M.D., as I share House's Rubik's complex and live to see him solve the puzzle. Guessing the diagnosis before he does is enough to make me jump up and down; it pleases me that this happens so rarely.

I've also really gotten into Doctor Who lately, although I'm still very behind on Classic Who canon. Bear with me.

Previously, I was a huge fan of Queer Eye and Queer as Folk. I go back and forth on American Idol, and I dabble in various other places. I suppose I'm still a fan of Harry Potter, but a bit smaller than "huge." Watch what load you put your fandoms in; they should always go in on "delicates."

I Think That What You And I Do Matters

"To be a master of any branch of knowledge, you must master those which lie next to it; and thus to know anything you must know all."
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Where am I, and where am I meant to be?"
-- Albert Einstein, telephoning his wife on the way to an important meeting.

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
-- Arthur Schopenhauer

"Dying people lie too. Wish they'd worked less, been nicer, opened orphanages for kittens. If you really want to do something, you do it. You don't save it for a sound bite."
-- Dr. Gregory House, House, M.D.

"We experience moments absolutely free from worry. These brief respites are called panic."
-- Cullen Hightower

"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth."
-- Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

"If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?"
-- Scott Adams

"You took a chance, you did something great. You were wrong, but it was still great. You should feel great that it was great. You should feel like crap that it was wrong. That’s the difference between him and me. He thinks you do your job, and what will be, will be. I think that what I do and what you do matters. He sleeps better at night. He shouldn’t."
-- Dr. Gregory House, House, M.D.

"If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things."
-- Rene Descartes

"Or we could just make small talk."
-- Dr. Gregory House, House, M.D.
