I have had a most stressful last 5 days. My parents-in-law, Bill and Hilda are both nearing their 80th birthday, and are still living in their own 5 bedroom house. Both are in fragile health, but have previously resisted our suggestions to relocate them. It all came to a head on Monday night when Hilda fell and broke her arm near her shoulder.

Finally, if you have aging parents, talk to them now.
The last thing my granny organised before going to the hospital to die was that we moved the sleeping room to the ground floor. "For me", she said, and meant "for my husband, when I'm no longer there", as he told as afterwards.
I've got a granny and a granddad left, both living in a house of their own. It's one of my biggest regrets in having moved to Berlin, not being able to help my parents with my grand-parents' needs (such as going to the doctors with them or the like). My parents live in an old, frame-work built house with very steep stairs. It's a pain in the behind to walk up- or downstairs when you aren't fit.
There's an old people home (or however you call that? Assisted living, maybe, from your post) being built right around the corner from where my parents live. Once it's open, they'll go there for a family visit, along with my grandparents.
The resumee of my post? You're so right, and I'm a bit happy that my family already manages to ponder about "what will be when...". Still, I know that it'll be a painful, stressful and exhausting thing to arrange - hence I'm wishing you (and your wonderful daughter and the rest of the family) loads of strength to cope with the situation!
