Tony opens the door to his hotel room just as Bruce's left knee fails and sends him stumbling into the nearest warm body, which is, of course, Tony. There's no one else around.
"I'm drunk," Bruce announces, his eyes set slightly wide, like it's a surprise to him, too.
"I miss all the best parties," Tony grouses. He pulls Bruce inside the room. "What are you doing drinking without me, huh? Double points off since you knew I was in town. We were meeting tomorrow, hello."
"Couldn't wait. Betty, she-"
"Tell me that insane woman broke up with you. Am I holding up a dumped man?"
"Not yet," Bruce says with a laugh. "Not officially. I should check my answering service. She may have by now."
Tony doesn't know what to say to that except "Take a load off" as he shoves Bruce onto the couch.
"I miss Pepper," Bruce says. The words come out on a barely audible huff of air. "I miss you and Pepper."
And there really isn't anything to say to that--it's been almost two years since he and Pepper were officially nothing in particular, and all Tony gets any more are phantom pains, which he knows will keep coming for the rest of his life, meaning that he's as over it as he ever will be--so Tony changes the subject with, "What makes you so sure Betty's done with you?"
"Feeling," Bruce sighs. "Just a strong feeling."
"You're a physicist. What the fuck do you know about feelings?"
Bruce laughs again, sad and cynical, and Tony is reminded of why they haven't let Bruce drink since that one time when they were kids. With his barriers down, he's a little too much, for anyone to deal with. "Not a goddamn thing, apparently."
Tony crouches in front of the mini-bar and removes a bottle of water and a tiny scotch. "Yeah," he says, tossing Bruce the water. While Bruce fumbles, Tony unscrews the cap on the booze and tips back half the contents. "Join the club."
