Livejournal's "upgrade" isn't.
I'll switch back to the old version as long as I can, but I'm sure it'll dissapear soon.
Gripes:
Navigation is even clunkier than it was. What was once called "friends" is now called "feed." I suppose that makes a small amount of sense, but it isn't intuitive for a long time user.
Where I used to get an advert for a cooking blog when I logged in (god, I got tired of seeing the same photo of chocolate chip cookies) now I get a screen full of synopses of posts from one "onotheydidn't" or some such on my login page. I REALLY don't care to see some DF's opinion on Rayjay's sex tape profits being his wedding gift to Kimyaye.
What's with all the popup menus? Having a seperate window for login doesn't appear to provide any benefit whatsoever, and creates an extra step.
It seems to me that Livejournal's changes follow a trend. Sites are changing for change's sake. To seem like they're keeping up to date, several websites keep tweeking their interface (web based e-mail is probably the worst offender). Rarely do these changes acctually ammount to improvements. Often, they make working with the site even less convenient.
So, my two cents on "improving" the site:
Make the login one of the first things I see, don't hide it behind a superflous button.
Don't bombard me with useless information I didn't ask for on my main page. Once upon a time that space was reserved for administrative posts from Frank the goat, who kept us abreast of the goings on related to the site itself. It's been a long time since I've heard from Frank.
