Well, I finally made it to Paris. The reason I didn't update from there was because it was so incredibly amazing that I didn't get on the internet much. It was so nice staying in an actual hotel. I had to share the room with two strangers, but they were both quite nice, and it was a great alternative to sharing it with 17 strangers like in Amsterdam. The food was absolutely amazing. I let myself splurge in Paris, and it was definitely worth it.
I went and watched the sun set behind the Eiffel Tower on my first night there, and it was so cool. There are thousands of lights on it that sparkle and flash, and it's really cool. I didn't know that it did that, so it was quite a nice surprise. My first full day in Paris, I met up with Sundus and her brother and sister in the Louvre. It was funny that we ran into each other there. I got her e-mail saying she was going to be there, and so I headed there, figuring that maybe I would run into them. As soon as I saw the crowds, I thought there was no way, but we met up. The Louvre was absolutely massive. We made a bee line to the Mona Lisa, and I couldn't believe I was seeing it in person. It's not my favorite painting, but I think the fact that it's so popular definitely helped. It was almost impossible to get close to it because of the crowds.
We wandered around the Louvre for the entire day, and returned later again in the day because there was so much to see. I was so excited to see David's Oath of the Horatii and The Raft of the Medusa, and all of those fun things. It took us more than 30 minutes to get out because there would be sortie signs indicating an exit...and then there would be no exit. It would point into a wall or something. It was really frustrating.
The next three days in Paris were a crazy whirlwind of fun. We made it to Versailles, and the gardens were probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. We walked around the gardens for about an hour talking about what it would be like if you actually lived there. It was incredible. My favorite museum was the Musee d' Orsay. I really enjoyed all of the Impressionist works.
We went up in the Eiffel Tower, and that was a lot of fun, especially when Sundus contemplated talking to the Spanish Olympic Gymnastic Team until they finally left. We ate at this amazing Italian Restaurant and Amad ordered a bottle of wine for the table. It was a fun night. It was basically four crazy days of seeing every possible sight imaginable. I really didn't want to leave Paris. It was definitely my favorite city up the that point. It's still my favorite city that I've been to, BUT...
Nothing can beat staying at 4,000 feet in the Swiss Alps in Gimmelwald. It was amazing. Well, my internet is about to run out. I'll post another entry with funny stories from Paris, hiking in the Alps, and my hellish train ride to Florence that involves me not having enough money and getting kicked off the train...
